Last year I wrote an article asking the question’ What if Bea Smith Found Love in Prison?’ At the time, it seemed like one of those ‘what if I won the lottery’ questions, a long shot with the odds of it happening highly unlikely. Then came Wentworth Season 4.
This article contains spoilers so if you haven’t seen Wentworth Season 4, please do not continue reading.
The climate at Wentworth Correctional changed in Season 4 with the arrival of Kaz Proctor. The former Red Right Hand leader believed that Bea Smith betrayed everything the Red Right Hand stood for and they became nemesis.
It was revealed through flashbacks of Kaz’s childhood that her own father had molested her and her mother sided him. Young Karen Proctor lost her innocence and became an advocate for women’s rights, fighting the injustice against them from being victimized by men. Hearing Bea Smith’s story of a turbulent relationship with husband Harry Smith caused Kaz to believe they were kindred spirits. But by the time Kaz arrives at Wentworth, that’s was all over. Kaz found a new group of kindred spirits in her crew at the prison. But one of those prisoners, Allie Novak developed an interest in Bea Smith which turned romantic.
Meanwhile, new prisoner and former governor Joan Ferguson plotted her acquittal and return to power as Wentworth Correctional’s governor again. She played on Kaz’s sympathies and strong urge to protect women from violence against men when Kaz believed that Will Jackson had attacked Ferguson and that Bea Smith was covering for ‘a screw’ because Smith and Jackson were carrying on a secret tryst.
By this time, Bea and Allie were exploring their feelings for each other by spending time together. Looking at cloud formations while in the prison yard, they admired the sea horses they saw. Allie worked in the kitchen and Bea often sneaked in to spend time with her and share kisses.
Meanwhile, Ferguson convinced Kaz that Bea Smith had to die. Joan had obtained some drugs and poisoned Bea’s orange juice. Allie was lured away from the kitchen so Ferguson could finish Bea off. However, Kaz learned after listening to a recording presented to her by Will Jackson that it was Ferguson who was responsible for her incarceration.
First Allie and then Will Jackson performed CPR and revived Bea. She made a full recovery but was lead to believe by Kaz that Allie had lured her to get attacked. Bea was angry and heartbroken. Allie fell back into her old drug addict ways.
Once Bea realized the truth that Allie hadn’t set her up and had in fact helped to saved her life, their romance resumed and they consummated their relationship. But their path to love was on a course with Hurricane Joan and Ferguson again used drugs to commit murder and shot Allie up, causing an overdose.
Ferguson cold comment to Bea that Allie was “collateral damage” was enough of a confession of guilt.
Bea Smith had fallen hard for Allie Novak and now it looks like they’d never be together. Bea was already a strong woman alone but she and Allie made a strong and likable pair. They both faced difficult times in their lives but made it to the other side. It’s a pity that Wentworth fans won’t get to see more of this relationship.
