Happy Anniversary @TheCW Launched Original Programming September 20, 2006 via @stacyamiller85

The CW celebrates its 10th anniversary this week. It is the combination of the former The WB and UPN networks.

Although The CW officially launched on September 18, 2006, the network began airing original programming on Wednesday, September 20, 2006 with the two hour season premiere of the now defunct America’s Next Top Model.  The new network took shows from The WB and UPN such as Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, Charmed, Gilmore Girls, Smallville, Supernatural, Dawson’s Creek, One Tree Hill, Veronica Mars, the aforementioned America’s Next Top Model, Star Trek and Everybody Hates Chris and added them to the lineup.

In the early days of The CW, the programming was geared more to the teen and young adult markets with series like One Tree Hill, Dawson’s Creek and Gossip Girls being the network’s heavy hitters. In recent years, scifi and horror fare like Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, The Originals and The 100 became popular.   As the new season approaches this October, The CW is now ‘home of the superhero’. The Flash, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl, which moved for CBS, are now the network’s signature.

The CW, also known as the fifth network, has faced many struggles in its ten years.  But it remains undaunted as it strives to air quality programming and keep up with larger network  siblings like ABC and CBS.

Happy Anniversary The CW!
