Chanel-o-Ween and the Joy of Scaring

Tuesday marked the first night of a three week Scream Queens Halloween event. I was super excited about because I always enjoy Ryan Murphy’s Halloween episodes in American Horror Story. The episode, Haunted House, starts off with the introduction of Chanel’s “philanthropic” outreach to poor and less attractive girls.

Each girl receives a box with some sort of Halloween prop or accessory. The squealing girls and their reactions to Chanel are high pitched and definitely high comedy. We then cut back to the Dean, Wes, and Gigi being interrogated by the police after the Red Devil attack, though the cops are more interested in the Dean’s hash recipe than hashing out the facts. After a bit of cop talk, we get to see Grace and Pete’s epic adventure in investigation. Diego Boneta winds up doing what is possibly one of the best Matthew Macoughnehay impression ever! Also big reveal time, super mega spoilers!! The baby from the bath tub is…NOT A BOY! Ooops, sorry about that Grace and Pete you got the wrong gender. We get to learn sort of what the Kappas from the bathroom did after they disappeared from the campus. All had totally normal things happen to them, yeah right.

Now onto Zayday, who Security Guard Denise still thinks is the murderer, and her quest for Kappa power! With a bit of prompting from Earl Grey, the British Frat bro, she announces her plans for a Haunted House that Chanel counters with plans for a Haunted Pumpkin Patch. The Red Devil makes an appearance to remind the audience that loose lips get zipped, because you know he kills someone. It’s what he does. There’s also possibly the weirdest almost sex scene in a cemetery between Hester and Mr. Chad “Can’t Keep It In His Pants” Radwell. Actually any cemetery sex scene is at least a little weird, especially when one of the people there is hitting on headstones. Denise and Pete share a moment while Zayday starts setting up her haunted house. You also get some Denise backstory, she and Zayday do not like each other, but their dialogue is great!

Chanel must feel really stressed out this episode because she breaks up a cotton ball lunch to get pizza. Somehow this decision turns into an intense Chanels on chauvinist jerks beat down, which is glorious to see. Then a hookup turns into a dead body palooza, but it means Zayday might win the battle of the haunted houses. Though mostly because the college kids are crazy obsessed with dead things here. In a huge cliff hanger, Zayday goes missing, but the cops and Dean don’t sound like they really care that dead people have shown up and a girl has disappeared. The episode ends with a flash to the screaming woman who looks a heck of a lot like a woman we’ve seen before.

This episode really pulled me back into the series after feeling a little let down after last week.  I’m really excited to see what happens at the pumpkin patch and how all of the stories shown this week connect. This three episode event I think is going to be my favorite set of Halloween episodes by Ryan Murphy and that’s saying a lot because I really love the Murder House Halloween two parter. I still have no idea who the Red Devil is and would love to hear what you all think. Please feel free to share any of your guesses, impressions or thoughts about the show with me either in the comments or on Twitter, @kleffnotes, I’d love to hear from you.
