Some Info to Feed Your Brain Before You Buy iZombie on DVD

Today is a big day for iZombie fans, we are just one week away from the start of season two and the first season is now out on dvd. If you haven’t watched the series yet, this is the perfect time to binge it. You can totally finish the whole season in a day, if you try really hard. With a week until season two, you have plenty of time to get caught up if you don’t want to do a one day binge-a-thon. For those of you dedicated fans who have already watched the first season numerous times, the dvd release will make bingeing it whenever you want even easier. I was able to watch the dvds a bit early, all thanks to my job at a video store, and thought I’d share what I thought of the dvds and their special features.

My first impression of the dvds was that the menu screen is more old school than I expected. It just has the promo image of Liv holding the brain cream cone, which is also the image on the box and the info packet inside. At the bottom of the screen are just four circular option buttons: play, episode selection, languages, and deleted scenes/bonus features. I was hoping the opening credit song would play while the menu was up, but it just plays a sort of generic chord progression. This greatly hindered my ability to loudly sing, “I’m already dead!” and annoy my family while I had the dvds in. Disc one and two both have five episodes and the third disc has the last three. Thankfully, disc two doesn’t end with Patriot Brains so you don’t just wallow in Lowell grief between discs.

There are special features, but they are kind of minimal. Each disc has deleted scenes that you can watch, but not every episode has them and some of them are super short. I’m honestly not a huge fan of deleted scenes, I know that sounds lame, but I normally just don’t really think they are super worth my time. The cut scenes for tv shows are always less polished than the actual episodes and no really cool information gets revealed in them since the writers have normally found a way to include information from the cut scenes into the episodes in some way before the show airs. The first disc has deleted scenes for The Pilot, Brother, Can You Spare a Brain?, and Flight of the Living Dead. The first cut scene for The Pilot has some fun background for Clive and the scene for Flight of the Living Dead has a super cheesy commercial with Ryan Hansen in it so those two are worth a watch. Disc two only has one deleted scene on it and it’s for the super sad episode Patriot Brains. It’s a maybe five second scene of Clive and Liv talking so I think you could skip it. Disc three has a deleted scene for Live Rat, Dead Rat, Brown Rat, White Rat and Blaine’s World. The first scene is an extension of Major pretending to be a health inspector at Meat Cute and is alright. I think the way the original scene ended was definitely way better so I can see why they cut it. The one in Blaine’s World is just a quick conversation between Liv and Ravi on the phone.

Besides the deleted scenes, the only other special feature is the 2014 Comic Con Panel. I initially thought the panel was the one from this year’s SDCC, but nope, it’s the one from before the show aired. The panel is still interesting, especially Robert Buckley and David Anders because they are just acting goofy the whole time. If you haven’t seen the 2015 panel I know you can find it on the internet if you want to compare the panels.

I had really hoped there would be a blooper reel because I can just imagine the cast getting into all sorts of shenanigans on set, but no luck. I’m hoping next season’s dvd set will have one or that maybe someone will release one on the CW website. I’m still really excited that the dvds came out, I just wish the special features had been a bit cooler.
