This Tuesday the episode of Scream Queens, Chainsaw, aired on Fox. I really wish this show weren’t on at the exact same time as iZombie because I know a lot of iZombie fans are really interested in it. I guess this is why dvr and the internet exist. Reader beware you’re in for some spoilers.
The episode starts off at a convenience store, which looks exactly like the kind of place you’d find a serial killer hanging out. Zayday and Grace are there looking for snacks and while discussing chips and chocolate syrup a red devil pops up. Luckily our girls have their wits and tasers about them. Now since this is episode two (technically three with the double length pilot), you know that the boy behind the mask can’t be the real Red Devil, because that would be way too easy. The episode then jumps to the Kappa house where another body is missing and we learn the sassy security guard hates horseradish, followed by a vigil and the reveal of a brand new and very tasty mascot for the college.
After that we learn that Zayday and Grace are investigating the disappearance of Chanel #2, who danced with the devil in the pale glow of Twitter last week, and we get to meet her parents. Buffy fans, Charisma Carpenter is her mom! If Cordelia Chase had stayed a mean girl she would totally be this character. Grace’s dad is back with a brand new job and not one, but two ladies looking to snag him. Earmuff Chanel shares her possible crazy paternity, Hester gets a makeover, and the Kappas get some new roommates. Grace and her boo to be, Pete, have plans to find out who the Kappa baby is, with plenty of innuendo, and the frat bros star in a murderous Backstreet Boys music video.
If you hadn’t guessed based on the episode title, chainsaws are the weapon of choice for the Red Devil and even make an appearance in an Intro to Film lecture. Denise starts making some kind of crazy accusations and we learn one of the sorority sisters has her own chainsaw too. The Dean owns the craziest white noise machine ever, it has a slasher movie setting, which oddly enough I might actually fall asleep to now that I think about it. There’s one last big chainsaw scene and then the episode ends.
While aspects of this first normal length episode of the show were funny, the amount of jumping around and disconnected scenes concerned me. The introduction of a new mascot and his corresponding voice over section, very Glee, felt a bit unnecessary after it ended in a bit of blood and vanilla swirl in the locker room. Parts of the jumping around reminded me of what bothered me with AHS: Freak Show. It seems like there are just so many disconnected plots that I’m not sure they’ll all get tied together in the end. It feels a lot like I’m watching a bunch of really well done scenes, but not really a connected episode. I really enjoyed the double episode length pilot, but this single episode just didn’t draw me in as much. I’m going to keep watching and hope that I’m just being pessimistic.
Erin alerted me to the fact that there would be an AHS: Hotel sneak peek during the episode and I waited with baited breath to watch it. I recorded the episode so I was able to flip through some of the commercials, but I actually almost missed the Hotel peek. I was expecting a small scene or maybe a full length commercial, but instead all they showed was something really short, much like the promos teased on Youtube. It has a man laying on a bed that seems to be moving and another man seeming to come alive underneath it as the man above him falls asleep. It reminded me a lot of this really short horror video I saw last Halloween “The Little Witch.” If you haven’t seen it here’s a link for you, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiKFEwI5YrI , it’s super short. I’m hoping next week I will have more fun with Scream Queens and maybe with AHS: Hotel starting the day after it airs there will be a really cool teaser. I am going to try and keep my hopes up because I really want to like this show.
