After reading Erin’s article “The Magical Creature David Anders” I started thinking about the character Anders played on Alias. While I didn’t watch the show something about the character’s description sounded familiar. During the summer my library hosted a live chat/interview with Javier Grillo-Marxuach and he talked to us about his work as a screen writer and the different shows he’s worked for. At one point he mentioned creating a character for Alias that was only going to be in one episode, but to his surprise, especially since he wasn’t writing for the show anymore, kept appearing in episodes. Once I started thinking about Grillo-Marxuach I realized that I had the perfect topic for an article. Today I am going to share the good news about The Middleman with all of you.
Okay, that sounded a little Book of Mormony, oh great now the song “Hello!” is stuck in my head, but it’s a really great tv show so you should listen to me anyway. The Middleman ran on ABC Family for one season in 2008, though I don’t think it aired at the same time or day for all 12 episodes. It starred Matt Keeslar, who some of you might recognize as fake Dewey in Scream 3, as The Middleman and Natalie Morales, who has been in tons of things including Parks and Recreation, as Wendy Watson. The series starts with a crazy monster attacking this agency that Wendy is temping at. Instead of freaking out Wendy fights off the monster and finds herself with a job offer at a business that isn’t everything that it appears to be. The dialogue is hilarious and there are ridiculous amounts of pop culture references that show up in every episode. There are mobster gorillas, zombie trout, alien boy bands, and my personal favorite, a Vlad Dracula ventriloquist dummy. There’s adventure, romance, intrigue, and side splitting comedic sequences. It’s a very family friendly show, they even edit out inappropriate langue with literal bleeps that they’ve written in.
If that wasn’t convincing enough there are some great guest stars. Kevin Sorbo, yep Hercules from Hercules, is in an episode as a 1960s Middleman who wakes up from a cryogenic sleep. He is great! For Supernatural fans there is a cameo that you will absolutely love. Mark Sheppard, that’s right Crowley, plays a character named Manservant Neville, who isn’t exactly the sweetest most loving character in the series. Okay, he’s totally a villain and I love it so much!
The show is based off of comic books of the same name. Actually the finale of the one and only season was done as a comic book because the series was cancelled before they were able to film the actual episode. The cast did a live read of the finale and if you look hard enough you can find it on YouTube. Since there are only twelve episodes it’s a super easy to binge tv series. You could do it in a day if you hardcore binged or in a weekend if you want a more leisurely viewing.
