A Horrifying Parade and Other Things – The Walking Dead Edition

SPOILERS below in case you haven’t seen the season six premiere

The Walking Dead returns tonight for its second episode. After last week, will we finally get answers to all our questions? Will the walker parade be able to be controlled? Will they get into Alexandria? Who is JSS? Why is that horn blaring? Is Rick’s leadership leading Alexandria to victory or death?

Personally I think the Walker parade cannot be contained again. Those hundreds and hundreds of walkers are on the loose and closer than ever to Alexandria’s walls. Not to mention that they will make getting supplies even harder now. I thought they should have dealt with the walkers while they were still contained in the quarry. A very large fire would have eventually done the trick. The walkers themselves keeping the fire fueled until there was nothing but stone and ash left.

We already know from last week’s preview that at least some walkers are threatening to get into Alexandria. I’m not sure how they would be able to get through the walls unless someone left the gate open again (Looking at you Gabriel) or there were enough of them to force part of the wall down. However it happens, it is a credible threat that will be mostly new for the Alexandrians, exempting the few they had recruited along the way, and a test for the battle hardened. Let’s see if Carl is able to not only defend himself, but Judith as well. There is also Carol and Maggie. Both of whom will be fine. Maggie will have her hands full dealing with a still grieving Deanna and will probably have to take on a leadership role. Carol will be a little trickier. She has been lying to the Alexandrians, making herself off as a Suzy-Homemaker. Will she hide and let them be in danger to keep up the ruse or will she finally show her true self? We also have Jessie who says she can protect herself and her boys. We will see how true that will be.

Down to whom or what JSS is now. Let’s go back and see about the situation surrounding those initials for any clues to its meaning. It’s written by Enid, a newcomer to Alexandria not long before Rick and crew showed up. She is an orphan and understands what the outside is like. She more than likely knows how to take care of herself as well then or at least as well as Carl or any other young teen does. But is Enid who she claims to be? How did she survive alone? Perhaps she is involved with those wolves as a kind of spy and this is some kind of signal. I don’t think it’s a very good one if it is, considering it’s written on fog covered glass and will disappear rather quickly. I think it’s more along the lines of someone’s initial that she used to know and is remembering. We know from last season that she sometimes leaves Alexandria for some alone time and this seems like another of those. It would be much safer to sit in a car and remember than to sit out in the open where anyone or thing could see and hear you. Whatever it ends up being, I am intrigued with Enid and hope we find out more of her past soon.

Now to the episode ending drama, the blaring horn that has caused all sorts of chaos. Why is it blaring? Is it being done on purpose to ruin Rick’s plan? Maybe it’s Enid who may be in trouble and could only think to hit the horn of the car she’s in to call for help? It could be another situation entirely from a nearby roadway where something is going on and someone is uses their horn. I’m thinking it’s the Wolves. We haven’t discussed them much, but we know from last season that they are collecting walkers into the semis. It makes sense then that they are the ones who let them out into the quarry and are keeping them there. If they had a lookout, they probably saw Rick and the others and they have a heads up when they start leading the walkers out. Why would they keep walkers like that? I don’t know. It would seem to make the land around them safer, as has proven for Alexandria, but you could just as easily go around killing them and get the same end. There is a reason they are keeping them and I’m sure they are none too happy that Rick has decided to let them out. He may have unknowingly made a very big enemy and made Alexandria a target.

That leads us to the final point. Is Rick’s leadership effective and good for Alexandria? Ever since Deanna’s son and husband were killed, she hasn’t been any more than a figurehead. She agrees with anything Rick says without thought and because the people of Alexandria still trust her, they go along with it. It explains the quiet conversation Glenn and Maggie had when he asked her to take care of Deanna. Maggie asked because she’s fragile and then added, but that’s not all and Glenn agreed. They need Deanna’s support to continue to run Alexandria. Rick’s tactics have been harsh and many if not most have disagreed with the way he is going about things. Rick’s argument is always that they don’t get it, since they have lived within the walls and have been safe the entire time.

That’s not entirely true though, is it? Most of the people have lived that way, but many go out such as the recruiters (Eric and Aaron) and the people they bring back. Not to mention the larger supply runs that is made by Heath, Scott and Annie and presumably others. They know very well the danger and yet do not act like Rick and his group. I also have to point out that nothing tragic ever happened within Alexandria until Rick arrived. Of course this is TV and it needs drama to survive, but it adds to the level of danger Rick puts people in. They had never had a walker within Alexandria until Gabriel left the gate open. They might have more in now because of Rick’s plan too. Pete was always known to be a terrible person and everyone knew it. They were more prone to passivism though (while they should have at least jailed him for a time to try and teach him a lesson and change his ways), but also let Jessie make the decision for herself. Rick took that agency away. There will be consequences now if people are hurt and there is no doctor to help them.

Rick can be a great leader, but he needs to get his head back on his shoulders right. He always falls too far to the left of right. He let the Governor get away with too much and now he won’t let anyone get away with anything, as if any human can be perfect all the time. If anyone else waved a gun around at people within Alexandria while screaming at them, what would Rick do to them? He is making a different standard for himself and his family versus the rest of Alexandria. It’s not fair and it will end ugly. I hope they can all get it together before the wolves make their appearance.
