Vanished

This is a true tale. Might seem fake or apart of some ghost story you tell around a campfire, but it’s not. This happened to my brother and myself…….*insert evil laugh here*

When I was growing up, I lived in the small town of Riverview, outside of Tampa Florida. The town is no longer small, but it was then. We lived on the edge of town, in a small little neighborhood, the typical suburban life. I lived with my grandparents, my siblings and mother lived the next town over. I was very close with my brother Michael,  and several times a month my grandmother would take me to pick him up to stay with me a few days. I was about 13-14 when this happened and he’s 18 months younger than I am.

One weekend I asked  my grandmother if we could go pick my brother up so he could stay the weekend with me. Of course she said yes, but she told me right away that after we pick him up we needed to go the grocery store. I was ok with that, I mean come on, how else were my brother and I suppose to get snacks for the weekend. Twenty minutes later, we were pulling up to my mom’s house honking the horn. My brother comes running out with his bag full of clothes and hops into the seat behind me. I was sitting up front in the passengers seat. Him and are gab away about school and friends all the way to Kash-n-Karry.

After 30 minutes running around the store, grabbing every snack we could think of, it’s time to check out. We danced and played around through the parking lot. My brother and I loved spending time together. We were always laughing, joking, and having great adventures. Little did we know, we were about to have an adventure we didn’t ask for.

After we’re all in the car and buckled up, we start heading home. If you know anything about Riverview, you know on Riverview Drive there are four huge curves in the road, makes you feel like you’re on a race track…..that has right curves too. Well, we lived four streets down after the fourth huge curve. Michael and I were talking and looking out the window, noticing we would soon be home, since we were on the second curve now. My grandma was driving along, ignoring us paying attention to the road.

As we were coming up on the fourth curve, both my brother and myself noticed a little boy, about 5 or so, playing on the side of the road with his red ball. As we continue driving, we see the boy’s red ball bounce across the road and this small child right in front of our car. My grandma’s not slowing down either! Both my brother and I start calling her, “Grandma, Grandma”. She’s not stopping!! We plow right into this poor little boy and as we do my brother and I scream “Grandma, you just hit that boy”. My grandmother looks at us like we’re stupid, saying there’s no boy. Immediately, Michael and I turn around and look out the back window, to prove to her she just mangled a child with her car. The problem though was there was no boy. No boy anywhere. There was a red ball in the ditch on the other side of the road though.

To this day, my brother and I still talk about that day and that boy. Wondering who he was and if maybe that’s the way he died. There was a rumor around town that a family lost their child around that same area, maybe it was him. My grandma never believed us, no matter how hard we tried to convince her. If it wasn’t real, then why did my brother and I both see the same thing?……..
