When we last saw Reign, Mary and Catherine were in quite a pickle. Don Carlos sex games went to his head so to speak.
This article contains spoilers from the Reign episode titled “Our Undoing”, so if you haven’t seen it yet, please do not continue reading.
For the better part of two seasons, Mary and Catherine have been enemies. Catherine believed the prophecy that son Francis’ love for Mary would cause his death which made Catherine determined to keep them apart. But as the series progressed, Mary and Catherine developed a mutual admiration for each other. Catherine realized that Mary was no longer the young naive girl she knew but a strong capable queen, and Mary now sees Catherine’s loyalty and determination to fight for those she loves.
In “Our Undoing”, Mary and Catherine were forced to cover their tracks after Don Carlos’ sex torture instrument to the head mishap. If it was discovered that the queen and queen mother were involved in the Prince of Spain’s accident, the ramifications would be deadly for France. The best scenes in Reign explore the interactions between Mary and Catherine. Actresses Adelaide Kane and Megan Follows’ talents reign (no pun intended) supreme when they are together. Additionally, having watched Megan Follows perform since “Anne of Green Gables”, I was well aware of her capabilities as a dramatic actress but now seeing her as Catherine in Reign, I see she has a flair for comedy as well.
It turns out that Don Carlos’ injury doesn’t prove to be fatal and as luck would have it, he doesn’t remember the incident, so Mary and Catherine are off the hook. At least as far as Don Carlos’ sexual non-excellent adventure is concerned. Mary still has to make a decision regarding marriage to the Prince of Spain and Catherine is facing an inquiry regarding Francis’ alleged poisoning.
Then there’s Narcisse. He was determined to remain regent even by proving Catherine poisoned Francis even if that meant her execution. Plus, to keep Lola from learning the truth about the rat in her bath, Narcisse murdered the only other person who knew. A lot of good that did as Lola still found out and ended their marriage. Which is a shame for the character but not the audience, Narcisse was a better man when he was with Lola but evil Narcisse is far more fun to watch. I also hope the writers find a way to bring he and Catherine back together romantically. Whereas with Lola, Narcisse creates sparks but with Catherine, it’s a blaze. However, this looks unlikely now that Catherine firmly believes Narcisse set her up since exhuming Francis’ body revealed the poisoned liver not to be his.
Finally, Mary was advised to marry Don Carlos. “He’s like a nice plant, take him back to Spain and water him”, Catherine stated, suggesting Don Carlos’ brain injury has rendered him a docile ruler, which would give Mary all the power in running the kingdom.
Reign’s return offered viewers an exciting episode full of plot twists.

I really enjoyed this episode and your blog post marvelously highlighted the strong character and plot points that were presented. I also like seeing Mary and Catherine working together and felt that Adelaide Kane and Megan Follows’ scenes were dynamic. They seemed to effectively fed off of each other’s energies. Finally, I hope that the developments that occurred in this episode will still keep Narcisse front and center plot wise because both the character and the actor are too good to be relegated to the back burner.
