Ever hear the phrase ‘The inmates are running the asylum’ ?  Well, if you are a viewer of the brilliant prison drama on Netflix Wentworth, you may wonder if the inmates run the prison.

It has to be a challenge keeping a large group of people in line especially when you’re dealing with many different personalities. Add to the fact that these large groups of people are women and prisoners, and the challenges intensifies.

The task of running Wentworth Prison falls on the Governor.  When we first meet the prisoners at Wentworth, the Governor in charge is Meg Jackson.  Unfortunately, Meg is killed during a prison riot.

The next Governor is Erica Davidson, who had some positive ideas to improve the conditions at the prison.  But she is also involved in an inappropriate relationship with prisoner Franky Doyle.

The current Governor, Joan Ferguson knows how to run a tight ship.  It’s her manner and methods that leave little to be desired. She is a sadistic, militant ruler who uses and enjoys intimidation and fear as techniques.

The prison board may want to believe that the Governors run the prison but viewers may have a different opinion. There were various incidents of beatings, drug trafficking and riots, not under, but in front of the Governors. First Jacs Holt, then Franky Doyle controlled the women. The prisoners had to follow these inmate’s rules or face punishment in the form of bodily harm. The current ruler of Wentworth is Queen Bea. Bea Smith keeps the hive in running order although she refuses to reward them with the honey aka drugs that Franky offers. Nonetheless, the prisoners at Wentworth respect and follow Bea.
