The Real Villain of Daredevil

I’ve been live tweeting Daredevil for a few weeks with one of the other writers of The Nerdy Girl Express, Erica, and Jonathan White, who we interviewed a while back during our iZombie themed interview series. We have been watching episodes sporadically,  mostly because my work schedule has a tendency to throw a wrench in things. Now I really wanted to watch this show because I knew that Vincent D’Onofrio was playing the villain, Fisk. Well, the more we watch the show the more I realize I’m more afraid of a different character.

When we were first introduced to the people working with Fisk the the only woman in the room was Madame Gao. None of her lines were subtitled and we were forced to rely on second hand interpretations from other characters. She laughed a lot, but you couldn’t figure out what exactly it was that she thought was so funny about the situation. When Fisk interacts with the group, Gao is the only person he seems to be afraid of. While he might threaten the other people who work with him, she continues to be treated with respect.

Eventually Gao does get subtitles, but only when she is meeting with Fisk for tea. During the meeting she basically tells him that he is weak and that she could destroy him if she chose too, which sends him into a rage, but only after she leaves his home. Besides actively threatening Fisk, when we see Gao’s drug packaging location we learn something terrifying. All of her workers are blind, and not Matt Murdock blind. Their eyes are scarred as though someone had deliberately done something to destroy their vision. I honestly think that Gao had them blinded so that they couldn’t give any information about her operation. Her drugs are also super intense. We see two men who are hooked on them and they look super rough.

So not only is Gao running super addictive and dangerous drugs, but it looks like she has made sure that the people in her employ are physically incapable of learning anything about what she does. She also scares the series’ big bad, which seems like something that truly shows how dangerous she is.
