#Reign – Mary, Don Carlos, Elizabeth and Court Developments

The Court was a buzzing on the latest episode of Reign as romantic and political intrigued continue to bring excitement to the period drama.

This article contains spoilers so if you haven’t seen the episode titled “Wedlock” please do not continue reading.

What to do when you’re a young queen with a country to think about and you want to do the right thing but know what you’re doing is wrong?

Such is the question facing Mary in the latest episode of Reign.  For the good of Scotland, she knows she must marry Don Carlos.  But her heart’s not in it, because her heart’s not into him. Mary is encouraged by English Ambassador Gideon to not marry Don Carlos because she will never be happy with him since she doesn’t love him.  He knows about love and lost, telling her about losing his wife in childbirth. Mary decides that she will marry Don Carlos after hearing that Elizabeth intends to do the same (it’s a lie).  She also agrees to grant him the Crown Matrimony, meaning that after they are married if she dies before granting him an heir, he’ll still be king.

Meanwhile over in another royal court, Elizabeth is queasy. Yes, the dubbed ‘Virgin Queen’ is pregnant.  Not good, as the father of her baby is a man already wed to someone else. When said wife learns of her rival’s impending motherhood, she’s furious and plots revenge.  Though killing yourself to frame your husband is extreme to say the least.

Don Carlos finally remembers the circumstances leading to his accident and vows to make Mary pay for deceiving him. He’ll take Scotland from her and perhaps her life too. He’s going to cash in on that Crown Matrimony!  Fortunately, Mary learns the truth about Don Carlos faking memory loss and tricks him into exposing himself. Then, Catherine banishes him from Scotland forever. “Take your toy and men and leave” was one of my favorite lines of the episode.  No way was Catherine having any reminders of Don Carlos’ sexual deviations left at the castle. I’m totally liking Catherine and Mary together, Mary lines them up and Catherine knocks them down!

The last few episodes of Reign have been stellar. Reign airs Friday, January 22 at 8/7c before giving its time slot to The Vampire Diaries, which will return on Friday, January 29.

Let’s hope Reign gets put back on the schedule again soon and not banished like Don Carlos!
