Alcoholism is a disease. The desire to drink can have deadly consequences which Sophie Donaldson, Liz Birdsworth’s daughter learned in Wentworth.
This article contains spoilers so if you haven’t seen Wentworth, please do not continue reading.
A girl needs her mother. But Sophie Donaldson grew up without her ‘mum’ when Liz was sent to Wentworth Prison. This had to have been hard for Sophie. She desperately wanted her mother to be there for her and probably turned to drinking as a way to block out her pain.
When Liz is paroled, she attempts to make contact with her children hoping to finally have a relationship with them. It doesn’t work out, but Liz is able to catch a glimpse of Sophie and and also save her from nearly being attacked outside a bar. Liz puts a drunk Sophie in a cab but even in her drunken haze, Sophie recognizes her mom. After unintentionally helping Bea Smith, Liz’s parole is revoked and she’s sent back to Wentworth.
In an ironic twist of fate, Sophie ends up as a prisoner at Wentworth after killing a man while drunk driving. This is a nightmare for Liz who wanted something better for her daughter.
Mother and daughter continue to be estranged. But Sophie develops feelings for Franky (much to Liz’s chagrin) after Doyle saves her from nearly being raped by Lucy Gamboro and her crew.
After rebuffing Liz’s attempt to be a mother, Sophie finally starts to warm up to Liz again and asks her mother to accompany her as she prepares to meet the widow of the man she killed. It is an emotional and heartbreaking meeting, but Sophie is able to offer her apologies and accept that her careless actions destroyed a family. Yes, Sophie grew up without her mom but it was her choice to get behind the wheel, not once but twice, while drunk. Although it’s strange to say it, but being behind bars may be the best thing to happen to Sophie Donaldson. She now has the opportunity to see what her mother’s life was like and also get to know the mother who had be missing from her life.
Sophie may be rehabilitated into a better woman at Wentworth.
