Tonight Starz will show a new episode of its Emmy winning show, Black Sails. If you haven’t seen any of the new episodes, you still have time to catch up! Read more to find out what you’ve missed so far. Obviously spoilers below.
We first find out that it has been a few months from the end of season two. I thought this was a good move as the first two seasons were condensed down into quite a short time line. Everyone now has had time to react to the finale and a lot of things have changed.
On Nassau, the island has not fallen into disarray without Eleanor Guthrie to run it. In fact it is still thriving without her. I wonder what she will think about that? Max has been able to buy up much of the property and with her business partners Jack and Anne; they have been running the town. They aren’t alone in this endeavor though. We find out that Flint and Vane are also in on this, for the good of all Nassau. Flint with his exceptional naval military training and knowledge is in charge of the ships in case England or Spain should attack. Vane is in charge of the ground forces, even though I couldn’t see any of those within the episodes. Max, Jack and Anne are in charge with keeping everything else running smoothly.
I wondered why there wasn’t much of a fight about the money that Jack and Anne were able to collect that was rightfully Flint’s, but with the death of Miranda still fresh I think he has bigger things on his mind. While he obviously still wants to protect Nassau I think his focus is more bent on revenge than legitimization.
We see him and the crew of the Walrus sacking not ships, but towns now. They are ruthless in their pursuit and none more so than Flint himself. He even mercilessly kills an honest magistrate and his wife. I think he knows what he’s doing is wrong, but his anger and grief at Miranda’s death still has him over the edge.

The only one to see this seems to be John Silver. He is still recovering from his partial leg amputation, but he is worried over Flint’s actions and how it will affect the crew. He’s obviously grown attached to them, something he fought hard against in previous seasons; and they’re attached to him as well. This also troubles John as I don’t think he wants to become a burden like Randall was (who I still miss…I liked him).
John even tells his concerns to Billy Bones who now shrugs him off. After his capture and torture with the English Navy, Billy is changed from the more innocent man he was and now puts his full trust in Flint, no matter what. I hope we see more of Billy’s thought process on this and if he’s really okay with murdering entire towns of people and putting his crew at risk. It is a nice contrast to see too that these two characters have essentially flipped sides.
We also find out that Eleanor Guthrie is back in England causing quite the sensation with her upcoming trial. She is given a chance at freedom though from a newly introduced character, English Captain Woodes Rogers. He needs her help to clear out Nassau and brings her along with his fleet of war ships. It’s a rocky relationship and they don’t trust each other, but he still seems willing to bring her along.
The show throws in a nice loop when Eleanor realizes she also has to contend with Captain Hornigold again. Now he is a privateer for England along with Dufresne and the other pirates that took Billy’s get out of the noose free pardons. It will be interesting to see Eleanor and Hornigold have to work together again and also watch Dufresne try and take down Flint as he seems pretty obsessed by it now.
I don’t think for a minute that Eleanor really wants Nassau taken back over by England. I think she is going to bide her time and let England take out her old enemy’s in Nassau and then strike from behind to take her island back. It will be hard on her though as those enemies include not only Vane, but Max too.
Max seems to have taken well to her new role as pretty much the owner of Nassau. She doesn’t seem to rule with an iron fist as Eleanor tried to, but instead still plays behind the scenes. She and Anne are still in a relationship and it seems to have only grown deeper. This still makes Jack uncomfortable and it puts a strain on his and Max’s business relationship. Max, as wise as ever, knows that Anne will still choose Jack over her and even though it hurts to admit it, she does to Jack and gets him to liquidate much of their conquered gold that is sitting unprotected in the still destroyed fort.
Now Max will be able to move their money around more easily and protect not only her own investments but also Anne’s. Jack is in agreement to this and we’ll have to see how well the job gets done. That is a tough one for Jack who has had trouble making the islanders work to get the fort ready again. He eventually has to trick Vane into getting slaves to do the work which bothers Vane immensely.
He has his own worries though as an old friend and foe alike is introduced. Edward Teach or as most people know him, Black Beard has returned to Nassau. He was one of the most feared pirates of all until Eleanor Guthrie was able to convince everyone to throw him off the island, Vane being the last one as he had been Teach’s protégé.

Teach hates the way Nassau is being run and complains that they are all too soft and too rich. That this makes Nassau weak. While I see his point that desperate men are more willing to do what needs to be done to survive, I don’t think he realizes the threat that England is about to be and that they have to have it together to have any chance of defeating them.
I don’t know if it’s because he doesn’t realize or he just doesn’t care, but I’m pretty sure Teach will attack the island and try to take it back over. I’m sure this will make Flint go bat crazy and make England’s eventual attack that much more powerful. Not that having Teach fight is a weakness either. I love the way Black Sails is able to weave so many story lines together while still having so much action.
Speaking of that, the Walrus had to go through a large storm to get away from Hornigold’s ship. I liked that the show filled in the plot hole with John Silver asking why they didn’t take the offered pardons and then immediately break their oaths. It would have saved them all this trouble. Of course, Flint can’t have that though, I don’t think the man can bend at all anymore or won’t. He is able to steer them through the storm with minimal losses other than a few crewmen (including poor Muldoon!) and some of the mast. Luckily this time Billy was able to hang on and not fall into the water.
The loss of Muldoon has deeply hurt John though who was stuck under the deck with him and had only to stare at his drowned body for an unknown amount of time before they were able to get him out. I think this will make John butt heads with Flint even more now. Add to that the crew is stuck out at sea and are quickly running out of food.
So what will Teach do? How will the crew of the Walrus get out of this one? Will Flint and John push each other too far? What will Vane do when he realizes that not only is Eleanor alive, but also on England’s side? Make sure to watch the new episode that comes on today at 9:00PM on Starz.
