Every girl dreams of giving her heart to someone she loves but on the latest Supernatural episode, “Love Hurts,” this dream took on a more literal meaning.

The one thing I have to say about Supernatural is that when they commit to a stand-alone episode, viewers get a stellar one. “Love Hurts” didn’t disappoint and was rich in all the trademarks (blood, gore, brother bantering) that have made Supernatural beloved by fans for eleven seasons.

In the teaser, a young babysitter Stacy who is having an affair with her married boss Dan gets her heart ripped right out of her chest. Trademark Number One-bloody and gory teaser, check.
Next we see Sam and Dean discussing Dean’s ‘Unattached Drifter Christmas’ aka Valentine’s Day sex hickey, in which Dean comments “You don’t have to be Mr. Right, just Mr. Right Now.” Trademark Number Two- brother bantering, check.
The brothers head off to investigate the murder and originally believe the culprit to be a shapeshifter when the nanny cam reveals that the cheating husband Dan, who was having dinner with his wife in front of many witnesses, is the killer. But that theory is squashed when Dan is later killed by the dead babysitter/mistress Stacy. Huh? Sam and Dean are stumped.
The Winchesters are helped in their research when Dan’s wife Melissa reveals that she knew about the affair and told her hairdresser, Sonya, who claimed to be a ‘White Witch’. Ms. Hairwitch gave Melissa a spell to use to get Dan to “return back to love” for Melissa. However, the spell was actually one for The Kiss of Death. Basically, the spell is an Aramaic curse and works as a death transference. The supernatural entity is a Quareen which appears to its victims as their deceased love one.
When the Quareen as Dead Dan tries to kill Melissa, Sam and Dean save her. Dean uses himself as the spell’s bait by kissing Melissa. The Kiss of Death shows the heart’s desire. Amara appears before Dean while Sam battles Sonya the hairdresser/witch.
Sonya and the Quareen are defeated (was there any doubt, the Winchesters are awesome!) Dean admits to Sam that his heart’s desire turned out to be Amara and expresses that they need to get rid of The Darkness soon before he succumbs.
I really enjoyed “Love Hurts” as it echoed the early seasons of Supernatural.
