Jane the Virgin is a dramedy that is more than about laughs. It’s about values and staying strong to them.
Gina Rodriguez plays the show’s title character, Jane Villanueva, a young woman with the dream of becoming a writer. She also has another dream, to remain a virgin until marriage. Though the second is more of a promise she made to her abruela when she was a child.
Due to an accidental insemination, Jane became pregnant and is now a mother. Ironically, she ended up in a relationship with the father of her son Mateo. But Jane has still remain true to herself and the courage of her conviction by remaining a virgin. In this day and age, it’s rare for a young mid-twenties woman to hold onto her virginity until marriage. Jane is a role model to the young women in the audience who may have found themselves in a similar situation (Deciding to remain a virgin until marriage, not the accidental artificial insemination). I applaud the writers of Jane the Virgin for showing a young woman of determination. And also Gina Rodriguez for bringing Jane to life.
I’m sure there may be viewers who could be thinking that maybe if Jane had given up her virginity to either of her suitors, Michael or Rafael, many of the problems in those relationships could have been avoided. I don’t know whether I entirely agree with this. Although intimacy is important, sometimes sex isn’t the answer to solving a couple’s problems.
Now, Jane is pursuing a new relationship with her teacher and as the promo below shows, the virginity question again becomes an issue.
It will be interesting to see how this story plays out.
