Viewers of Once Upon A Time have gotten to know the character of Snow White over the seasons.  We have learned about her love story with David/Prince Charming and how they lost their daughter, Emma to Regina’s curse.  But there was one aspect of her character that was never explained, which was how she learned to fight and became an expert markers woman.

In the flashback sequence, we see Princess Snow following her father’s death, sitting on the throne with Regina.  She has fear and uncertainty in her role as a young ruler.

When Snow runs off and falls in a hole, she’s rescued by a young man who introduces himself as Hercules.  The princess and the young warrior become fast friends.  He trains her in the art of fighting and helps boost her confidence by reminding that making mistakes are important because it enables one to learn and grow.

Bailee Madison has played Young Snow White in the flashbacks for several seasons now.  Viewers have watched her grow along with the character.  In addition to bearing a strong resemblance to Ginnifer Goodwin, it’s easy to picture her as the younger version of Snow White because she shows the qualities of the character, the goodness and caring for her people.  But she also lacks confidence in her abilities to rule and make the best decisions for her subjects.

She and Jonathan Whitesell’s chemistry convincingly moved the narrative forward.  Young Snow’s confidence peaked as she believed her skills as a fighter.  She would carry this new founded strength throughout her life.  Hercules taught Snow to be a hero.

Bailee Madison was the perfect casting choice for Young Snow White.  I look forward to her next appearance on Once Upon a Time.
