Sky Boivin is a poet, writer and artist. She is the author of various books: Inspired Thoughts, An Assortment of Poetry, Scattered Emotions, and Drawings by Sky Boivin. I recently spoke to Sky about her inspirations, themes in her poetry, her interest in art, writing short stories and fan fiction. Read what she had to say below.
How long have you been a poet?
“Well, I had started like everyone else, English class in high school. I just kept going with it. I always walked around with a journal and pen at the ready. some of my classmates today still remember that I was always sitting off in a corner somewhere just scribbling away; and that was almost 20 years ago!”
What poets inspire you?
“I love Longfellow, Wordsworth, Poe, all the classic poets. and then sometimes a random tweet or phrase from someone 😉 I also have always loved that Stephen King includes different pieces at the beginnings of his books as well.”
What themes do you feel are addressed in your poetry?
“Mostly nature, or just my feelings of a particular moment. lately, it has been of the loss of a close extended family member and some spiritual stuff as well.”
What challenges did you face in publishing your poetry?
“At first I was trying to go the traditional way with the publishers. I would enter poetry contests through places like http://poetry.com/ in hopes of winning the grand prize of being published. Then I started playing around with kindle and nook. I found out that I could self publish through https://www.createspace.com/and it automatically sends it as a kindle version as well.”
Besides for poetry, are there any other kinds of writing you also enjoy?
“I like to write stories as well. I just got a book sent to an editor recently. “Their Hope Within The Flames” is the title of this baby of mine. It should be getting edited any week now! thanks to the help of my SPN Family in getting the funding raised for the editing, I was able to get my dream that much closer to a reality! much love and thanks to all of their help, love, and support! I have also recently started writing some fan fiction just for fun.”
You are also an artist. Can you tell us how long you have pursued art?
“I use it mainly as a therapy release. I used to just doodle to keep my attention in class during high school. then I took a drawing 1 class in college to fill credits and just kept going with that. I love using pencil, and the soft pastels. those are so messy but fun.”
What advice would you offer any aspiring poet or artist?
“Just do what you love. write what ever comes to you. draw what comes to you. believe in yourself, and surround yourself with those who enjoy your work as much as you enjoyed making it.”
Are there any current projects that you are working on that you are able to share with us?
I am waiting to hear back from the editor on my book, but in the meantime, I have been writing my own fan fiction which can be found on https://www.inkshares.com/ and https://www.wattpad.com/ .
