Watching the Supernatural episode “Safe House” felt like having a reunion with old friends and realizing the more things change, the more they stay the same.
The episode featured guest stars Jim Beaver and Steven Williams as beloved hunters (and fan favorites) Bobby Singer and Rufus Turner.
When you have characters who can help carry an episode that holds viewer interest, that’s the ingredient for a successful spin-off. I believe that a spin-off featuring Bobby and Rufus would work as they are already established characters from the Supernatural universe that fans care about. Part of the difficult in starting a new series is creating something that viewers will want to watch. The CW already knows that Supernatural is a valuable member of their line-up as witnessed by the network’s decision to renew the series for a twelfth season.
Supernatural already has a well-known premise or formula with great actors/characters, a Bobby/Rufus spin-off would definitely work but sadly, it probably will never happen. The CW like the other networks is a business that functions through revenue that comes from advertisers. And in the youthful market of the social media age, a show starring actors that are older than the target audience would be hard to sell.
But this viewer can always hope. And in the meantime, thanks Supernatural for bringing Bobby and Rufus back to our television screens.
