It’s hard to believe that 53 years ago today, General Hospital premiered.
On April 1, 1963 a new daytime serial (which is what soap operas used to be called) premiered. Created by Frank and Doris Hursley, who were a husband and wife soap writing couple, General Hospital originally focused on the the happenings in the hospital of the same name in an unspecified city and town. Dr. Steven Hardy and Nurse Jessie Brewer were the key figures.
In the 1970s, viewers learned that General Hospital was located in the fictional city of Port Charles located somewhere in upstate New York. Although there were still hospital related story lines, the shift changed to more action adventure type themes by the 80s and introduced soap super couple Luke and Laura as well as the Port Charles mob.
The Quartermaines, Spencers, Webbers, Cassadines and Corinthos families introduced many intriguing characters with well-placed connections to other key characters.
General Hospital helped launched the careers of many famous actors and remains the longest running soap opera currently on the air.
