My name is Sam Winchester and today is my birthday.  My older brother Dean wrote me this letter. If you knew Dean, he’s not one to express his feelings. So, I’d like to share his letter with you.

Dear Sammy,

You know I’m not one for words, I think actions speak louder than words. And I’m not into the sappy sentiments. But if I don’t say these things in a letter, I know I would never say them to you.

Looking after you has always been my job. It’s been the most important job I had, even more important than hunting. And I know at times I’ve been a real pain.  As I once told you, I’ve always seen you as that kid I had to keep on the straight and narrow. I keep forgetting that you have grown up and are capable of making your own decisions and choices.  I’m proud of you Sammy, proud of the man you’ve become.  You’ve suffered pain and loss and some of it I was unable to protect you from.  But I want you to know that if I could be half the man you are, I’d consider myself lucky.

I also want to tell you I’m sorry for all the hurtful things I’ve said to you over the years.  And for the beat downs.  You are the last person I ever wanted to hurt but it seems like I’ve hurt you the most.  I know our relationship will never be what it was before with you totally relying on me.  But in a way, I think it’s better.  As you once told me, we have to be partners in this.  I can’t be Dad and bark orders at you ( I know how much you hate that).  So, I’m going to try to look at you as an equal from now on.  Stop laughing Sammy – I mean it. And we’ll find a way to beat The Darkness.  You and me against the world Sammy.

So Happy Birthday and try to have some fun, even if it’s not with me.  On second thought, there’s no one else you could have fun with.  I’m a fun guy.  So let’s put away the research.  Drinks are on me tonight!
