@PreacherAMC Recap: He Gone from @kleffnotes

You know the words have power and we should be careful how we use them idea? Yeah, Jesse is sort of having to come to terms with the power of words in the most recent episode of Preacher. I’m sure I’ve said some not so great stuff in the past, but I’ve never actively caused someone to have to spend time in Satan’s sauna.

After angrily telling Eugene to go to Hell, Jesse is alone in the church, but the mass must go on. Only problem is his Irish, blood drinking Jiminy Cricket, more commonly referred to as Cassidy, saw everything happen. Jesse is holding service with the loudspeaker up and running, the church is packed and so is the front lawn. Everyone enjoyed the service, but the sheriff is wondering where Eugene is. After service we are in Odin’s office, which is about as close to Hell as I think you can get in Annville. He’s just alone in there listening to the sounds of slaughter and drinking. Now after a moment for Odin we go back in time to when Jesse and Tulip were both in school together. The two of them apparently stood up to bullies, which led to one boy losing a nipple. Jesse insists that they can’t just leave Tulip at the school, her uncle is drunk and her mom is in prison, which means she’s crashing on their couch. Back in the present Tulip is running full out from the church. Her uncle is passed out drunk and she was working to grab his pants back from a couple of teenage boys. She can’t get him in the house, but she sits with him on the porch and watches as people stare at the two of them.

After a brief chat with Emily, Jesse is in the kitchen getting a drink when Cassidy comes in. He asks how it’s going and then keeps pushing to figure out what is going on with Jesse. When the preacher says that he’s going to get out of this weird conversation soon, Cassidy blurts out that he saw what happened with Eugene. He says that he’s not judging, but he needs to know what he can do to help. Emily awkwardly happens to be in the doorway, but leaves with Jesse. Then Tulip arrives and says that she’s here to make dinner, Cassidy wants to know why she isn’t on her way out of town to get Carlos. She insists that she will, but that the plan is just on hold. He also says that he didn’t tell Jesse what happened between the two of them, which she says is good because Jesse would have killed him. She asks if he told Jesse about what he is and he insists he told him nine times. The whole multiple number thing tips Tulip off and she says she knows he hasn’t because Jesse wouldn’t be okay with it. They then argue about who Jesse’s favorite actor is and then Cassidy reveals that Jesse can make people do whatever he wants by just telling them.

Back in the past Jesse and Tulip are wrestling in the living room while is dad is away, but when he comes in they have to stop to do the dishes. When Tulip goes looking for dish soap she hears Jesse’s dad on the phone and later that night she sneaks into Jesse’s bed. She asks him to say “to the end of the world,” which is their promise to each other, but doesn’t explain why. The next day two women from the state come to take her away and even though Jesse tries to keep them from taking her there’s nothing he can do. He confronts his father about why he called about Tulip and he says that because she’s an O’Hare that there will always be trouble. That night Jesse prays that God will take care of Tulip and that he will kill his father and send him straight to Hell. In the present Emily is at rehearsal for a church play and Jesse is there to give critiques. He wants everyone to look more scared, which is a frightening thought. Odin arrives and says that he finished his model and begins talking about a slaughterhouse in Brazil. He then confesses that when he inherited the business from his father that he neglected his birthright and that the business has not remained as strong as it once was. Odin then hands him a contract for his land and says that it’s all aboveboard. Jesse refuses to sign it and insists that Odin left a Christian. He takes the contract back and makes it very clear that he will be back for what belongs to him.

Emily and Cassidy wind up having a moment outside, he thinks she’s there to tell him off for smoking, but she really wants to talk about Jesse. She says that she knows there are things that would surprise her about him and Cassidy says that he thinks that’s true of all of us. Now it’s dinner time with Emily, Tulip, Jesse, and Cassidy, which is interesting. Cassidy is eating a ketchup covered burger and complaining about The Big Lebowski, Jesse is super quiet, and the hashbrowns are vanilla flavored. Tulip is getting frustrated and exclaims, “What the heck is going on?” when suddenly the sheriff is there. He wants to know if anyone has seen Eugene and while he’s asking a baking sheet catches fire in the oven. Hell looks like it’s working mighty hard to tell the sheriff where his son is. Jesse lies and says that he didn’t see him, but Emily says that she knows he saw him because she sent the boy in. She though covers for Jesse and says that she saw Eugene leave. Cassidy comes outside after Jesse and hits him in the face with a fire extinguisher, then asks how he is. He wants to help Jesse, who finally says that he didn’t mean the thing that happened with Eugene, but he doesn’t know what to do. Jesse finally tells us exactly what happened with Eugene and Tracy. Eugene had a huge crush on Tracy and told her that she had feelings for her. After she told him she didn’t love him he shot her and then shot himself. Cassidy doesn’t agree that Eugene deserves to be down there and tells him that Genesis is messing with his head. Jesse says that if God wants a sinner to burn why should he stop them. Cassidy then rattles off everything that he does that God wouldn’t agree with, insults God to Jesse’s face, and reveals just what happens when a vampire stands in the sun.

Tulip and Emily have just been waiting inside and after watching Cassidy burn Jesse comes inside and aggressively tries to get back to eating and drinking. Tulip asks where Cassidy is and Jesse asks if she knew what he was and then the two of them mention his dad. Jesse gets mean after that and insults Tulip’s family and her cooking skills. She storms out and Emily stays. She tells Jesse that she’s always believed in him and he says that’s stupid. He then tells her to go home and just sits alone in his kitchen across from the fire extinguisher. Suddenly we are back in the past and Jesse’s father is telling him to hide under the bed. Someone has broken into the house and they beat his father unconscious. They then take both of them out into the dessert and shoot his father in front of him as he yells that this is all his fault because he prayed for it. Inside the church Jesse is tearing up the floorboards and yells come back over and over again. While he’s doing this Odin has a crew of men coming to take the land by force. It looks like we are going to have ourselves a stand off of epic proportions next week in Annville.
