In the deep dark woods lurks something dark and dangerous and Steve Rankin is out to try and find out as much as he can about local legends for his book. He expected to hear more about Bigfeet, but instead learns about something truly horrific in The Dark #1.

Steve Rankin is meeting up with Karl Cooper of Fouke, Arkansas to go on a late night trip to the woods. While they sit around the eerie glow of a fire Karl tells him about a frightening legend connected to these very woods. Instead of Bigfoot they instead are plagued by an energy stealing witch, the Boo Hag. She comes upon her victims late at night and sucks the energy from their bodies.

Not only that, but she steals their skin and wears it as her own for as long as she wishes, or until it falls apart. Steve doesn’t believe this legend, but Karl insists that his brother was killed by the Boo Hag and that he saw her wearing skin around her shoulders. As Steve takes a moment to relieve himself in the bushes he finds himself face to face with a terrifying sight, a skinless corpse hidden in the shadows. Will he survive the night? Has the Boo Hag broken the wards? Find out by checking out The Dark #1 on Alterna Comics.

I loved this comic! The story drew me in and the idea of a skin stealing witch sneaking up on you in the middle of the night gave me shivers. The art also fit so well with the story. Shadows loom and the figure of the witch both in the comic itself and in the additional pages was terrifying. I am definitely interested in reading more of The Dark.
