Does Sam Winchester still have his demon warding tattoo?

This was the Supernatural trivia question that Jared Padalecki asked on Twitter today. Padalecki is currently filming Season 12 of the long running and enormously popular CW show.

Fans may recall that Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) had angelic ally Castiel (Misha Collins) burn off Sam’s tattoo in the Season 9 episode Holy Terror. The eldest Winchester was desperate to have Sam dispel the angel Gadreel who possessed Sam at the time. The only feasible solution was to have the demonic King of Hell, Crowley (Mark Sheppard) possess Sam and convince the younger Winchester to cast Gadreel out of his body. The strategy worked, but the brothers’ relationship was damaged when Sam learned of Dean’s duplicity in tricking Sam into consenting to Gadreel’s possession in the first place.

Flash forward to the Season 11 finale: Sam is in a precarious position courtesy of the British chapter of The Men of Letters.

Padalecki seems to enjoy interacting with fans on social media. His latest inquiry makes me wonder whether he is offering a tidbit into the upcoming season.
