When Oklahoma native Nicki Aycox was growing up, music played an important part in her life. The veteran actress and celebrated musician has revealed in interviews that musical greats like Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, Willie Nelson, and Stevie Nicks were some of her favorites. Further, she confessed a love for Edith Piaf. The dramatic aspect of Piaf’s styling no doubt profoundly influenced Aycox.
Yet, a different kind of dramatics saw Aycox’s own musical yearning put on the backburner as she left Oklahoma for Hollywood stardom. That was more than twenty years ago. During those years, Aycox amassed an impressive film and television resume. She is best known for her television roles in The X Files, Supernatural and Dark Blue.
On August 28, 2015, Aycox rekindled her love for music and proved her talents as a singer/songwriter with the release of her debut EP, Red Velvet Room. Pursuing her passion for music was certainly a leap of faith for Aycox whose fan base consisted primarily of people who knew her only as an actress. This leap of faith has been quite a success. Red Velvet Room has inspired listeners all over the world with songs that speak to our emotions, remind us of the comfort rooted in nostalgia and give us hope in these trying times. Especially popular with fans of this EP are the songs My Secret, Johnny and Charcoal Rain.
The allure of an artist like Aycox may perhaps be best summed up in two words: accessibility and vulnerability. Unlike many performers who hide behind a mask and create a barrier with the audience, Aycox puts her emotions on full display. We trust her because we know that she trusts us. This symbiotic relationship of sorts cements a foundation between the performer and her very appreciative audience. Further, Nicki Aycox is an artist who owns both her struggles as well as her triumphs.
On August 28th, Red Velvet Room celebrates its first birthday. I extend my heartfelt thanks to Nicki Aycox for courageously pursuing her musical dream. She has given us memorable songs to inspire, to heal and to bring us to that special place in our hearts where we feel safe and hopeful.
