Were you ready for that finale? I thought I was, but nope! So much happened so let’s get right to the recap. We see Aneela running through the snow of Arkyn with the voice of young Dutch and Khlyen narrating the story. While it sounds like a fairy tale, instead what we see is the first appearance of the green goo and the tests that were done to determine its strength. They used it to grow plants and the tomatoes that grew from them led one man to throw up green goo. Aneela also ate the tomatoes and Khlyen knows that green goo changes people. We see her crying green goo in the snow as Khlyen tells young Dutch to always remember the stories he tells her, especially this one because it is where it all began.
On Lucy in the present Dutch and D’Avin wake Johnny up and he immediately wants to go back and save Pawter. D’Avin insists that he can’t do anything for her because he checked her vital signs and she was gone. Johnny goes to be alone and watches as Delle Seyah announces that a holiday will be made for Pawter after her death, she’s turned the murder she committed into a form of propaganda. Dutch finds him and after giving him a drink tells him that she will help him take Delle Seyah down whenever he wants and that they can just fly away right now. He tells her that they can’t just stop fighting, even if they don’t know what exactly is going on. Lucy interrupts to say that D’Avin’s heart rate is elevated and it is all due to Fancy. He has the once dead killjoy in a headlock and he wants to know what Khlyen is up to. Before D’Avin and Fancy get too into it, men in white jackets randomly appear. Lucy says that she was caught by surprise and when the men ask where Khlyen is, Dutch threatens them with a dreadnought. As they ask where she got it, Khlyen appears and says from him. He shoots the three men with darts full of some green substance, not goo. When nothing happens immediately, he says that he may have miscalculated and warns all the killjoys to run, when suddenly the men begin vomiting up green goo and collapsing to the floor. Dutch realizes Khlyen used them as bait and he says he did a bit, but he needed to test his new weapon. The stuff in the darts could apparently save the entire Quad. The goo from the men has gone dark and Johnny and Lucy are analyzing it. Dutch and Khlyen are finally talking about Aneela and the dreadnought. He says that one day it might be necessary that she kill her because if Aneela finds out about Dutch she will kill her first. He says that Aneela was so young that when the green goo altered her it made her insane. That is why there are no young Sixes. He insists that he doesn’t know why Dutch and Aneela look so similar. Khlyen then explains that the green goo is actually sentient and bonds with the host, which means that Sixes aren’t entirely human anymore.

It’s story time with Khlyen again, but this time Dutch won’t learn about the green goo’s past through a fake fairy tale. Khlyen says that his people offered the ancestors of the nine centuries ago either assimilation or destruction. The descendants have had time to live off of the wealth of the Quad, but Khlyen’s people are the people that are receiving the Quad in the hand-off. They want the plasma there, but if Khlyen uses the stuff in his darts he can destroy all the plasma, which ends the invasion. With Arkyn full of Sixes preparing, the only way they can destroy it all is by going to the source and contaminating it. Aneela swore that she would track down and destroy all the survivors of the raid on Arkyn that D’Avin saw. The survivors were part of a raiding party that took the original tree growing in the purest plasma. Dutch goes to see Alvis and he says he doesn’t know where the tree is, but they do have some written references to it being stolen back by the devil, who we now know is Aneela. One of the pages has pinpricks in it that don’t match with the previous record keepers methods and Dutch tears these pages out of the book. Oh the history, oh no, okay she’s saving the Quad, but the poor book. It turns out that the odd pinpricks are a star map, which Johnny runs through Lucy’s systems and shows them a specific nebula. There’s an archive located there, specifically called Archive. Dutch says that Khlyen isn’t in charge here because this is their work. She insists that she is their way out, she is a runaway queen. In Old Town Delle Seyah gets a call and Khlyen tells her that his people are on their way. They’ll need to be creative in order to get what they want. He says that Dutch and her team are a complication and he’ll need Delle Seyah to help him deal with them. She says that she’ll do whatever he wants as long as she can go through the program.

The killjoys are at the archive and they dock. Dutch is introduced to the head of Archive in a remarkably formal way, it’s Trick! Lost Girl fans you know who I’m talking about. Dutch and Khlyen are escorted to a separate room, her genome has to be analyzed in order to open the door. Fancy and D’Avin take down Archive’s guards and D’Avin throws scanner balls so that Johnny can get a floor plan and hack the system. Johnny tracks down Aneela’s profile and Dutch can now get into that vault. Khlyen would like to make this go much faster and while Dutch is very against it, they resort to having to fight their way out when Archive’s head calls in his guards. Khlyen winds up having a chill chat, while Dutch fights alone for a very long time. When he does join, the fight gets epic. They get into the vault while Trick, I mean the head of Archive, sips tea and keeps his heart from blowing up. D’Avin and Fancy are fighting off guards and Lucy is under fire. Johnny initiates Operation Blueberry Foxtrot, which Lucy totally critiques as needing work, and he needs everyone to hurry. Dutch and Khlyen have found the tree, but he triggers a security feature. Suddenly sunlight floods the room. Dutch says they’re trapped and about to get roasted outside the orbit of a sun. The vault isn’t actually at Archive, but is accessed through some kind of jump. Johnny and Lucy are dancing with the other ships and in order to get to Dutch, D’Avin winds up getting Fancy to be a human shield. He totally isn’t okay with this, but he does it anyway. In the vault Khlyen gives Dutch the toxin and gets super burnt up shutting the sun door. Dutch pours the toxin in and nothing happens. Khlyen couldn’t test on an original source and apparently the stuff doesn’t do anything. Johnny beat the other ships and D’Avin and Fancy are in the head of Archive’s office demanding Dutch and Khlyen back. Dutch asks Johnny why the toxin didn’t work and Lucy says that they need to use the black goo that is created from the toxin mixing with the blood of a Six.

The only Six available right now is Khlyen and he takes the toxin from Dutch. She fights him and demands to know why he would do this to himself. He says that the Black Root is coming and there is little time. He also sees it as the only way. Those who were contaminated by the green goo initially were able to keep some autonomy, but Aneela and the others experimented until the Sixes were basically made into slaves. Khlyen had never wanted that and while he could live with it for a time, when he saw Dutch he saw a chance to make things right. Dutch says to shut up and not tell her that he loves her because he was going to make her a Six. He says that Aneela is going to contaminate everyone, so he chose to prepare her for the change. Then Khylen cuts his wrist and contaminates himself, then puts his arm over the green goo to destroy the source. Dutch insists he’s stronger than that, that he can’t die. As the goo changes to black we see the pools of Arkyn change, then we see Fancy fall to his knees. When he cuts himself he bleeds red. D’Avin comes into the vault and finds Dutch holding Khlyen’s body. She looks at him and softly says through tears that he’s gone.

Dutch is sleeping on Lucy with her hand resting on top of a red box. As she sleeps in walks Aneela, she sits beside her and touches her arm, when suddenly Dutch wakes up. Aneela being in the room was apparently a dream. Johnny comes in and asks if she is okay, she responds never better, but Johnny says that even if she doesn’t want to talk he wants her to listen. He gives a beautiful speech about being allowed to love someone you hate and she cries and hugs him. Dutch comments on how Johnny has been through so much, but is still being her shoulder. Johnny says that’s his second favorite job, the first though is being her drinking buddy. Dutch, D’Avin, and Johnny go to the Royale and are sharing a drink. As they sit there Johnny remembers Pawter’s death, but when Dutch says they can leave he says that he’s going to get the next round. Pree says that his money is no good here. They talk about the fate of Old Town and Delle Seyah’s promises. Johnny asks if Pree will leave, but he says that sometimes you leave, but sometimes you stay and fight. The two share a shot of Pawter’s favorite drink, which is super strong, and he goes out to get some air. We see Delle Seyah running to her meeting with Khlyen, it turns out that Johnny sent that message. Then after the two exchange words, he shoots her in the gut. He says that he didn’t do this for the Quad or to be a hero, but that he loved Pawter. Johnny then walks away, leaving Delle Seyah to bleed out. He goes back to Lucy alone and has a bag packed, when he tries to leave Lucy refuses. Johnny had booked 8 flights to 8 separate locations and she wonders if he was going to say goodbye, then she asks if she did something. He says no, he just didn’t want to say goodbye. She forgives him and asks if he is in trouble. Johnny says yes, that what he did could get him in trouble and he can’t bring that on D’Avin and Dutch. Lucy says goodbye, but there’s someone on board. Lucy had called Clara and said that she thought Johnny would need a wingman, especially one with a gun arm. Fancy comes into the Royale and reveals that he was getting stitches. Johnny has found Khlyen’s ship and he and Clara are taking it, even if they don’t exactly know how to fly it. With Fancy cured that means that all the Sixes made with Arkyn plasma are cured, though apparently Aneela drinks the stuff so she’s still dangerous. Dutch says that they can either take this victory or they can make Pawter and Khlyen’s deaths count. She wants to stop them all, Dutch wants to win the war.

Well, holy hells! That finale was crazy! No Johnny on the team, Fancy on the team, Delle Seyah dead, there’s so much that’s going to happen in the next season, I can’t wait!
