Go West #1 @ALTERNACOMICS Review from @kleffnotes

Go West is set in the year 2136 after a future civil war between a group of western revolutionaries and the rest of the United States, which has resulted in a division being drawn between Arizona and Nevada. As the years have passed western outlaws have continued to push the limits of the government by attacking those beyond the line. Arthur Slade and his family were within what should have been the safe state of Utah, but these outlaws have pushed him to the breaking point.

Slade merely wished to live in peace with his family, but when these outlaws kill all those he loves he takes matters into his own hands and decides that he must head west. As he prepares to get vengeance for the death of his wife and child, he collects weapons and destroys his once happy home. Slade blames himself for their deaths and believes that it is punishment for all the dark deeds he has committed. Before the comic ends he enters the western region and gruesomely attacks the first band of men he sees. These men responsible for the murders, but the attack was not merely a chance encounter. Go West #1 is available on Thursday, 11/10.

This first issue of Go West set in motion a violent story that hearkens back to  the golden age of westerns. It has the feel of a much older work, but in a captivating way. Slade epitomizes a merciless man on a mission for revenge and I am very interested in seeing where his journey will take him. The art in the comic falls within a very sepia inspired color palette with hints of color in moments of great emotion. One of my favorite pages shows Slade lighting his lighter as he prepares to burn his home to the ground and the flame seems so real. Not only that, but the scene above it is distorted by this ethereal looking flame. I’m interested to see more of Slade and to learn more about the western region as the series progresses.
