Slab is a comic book series from within the Double Take Universe, which is inspired by the world of the well known film Night of the Living Dead. I had previously reviewed the collected issues of Remote and was shocked to find I was actually in possession of Slab #1 and #2. I had gone to my comic book store for a promotional event and somehow managed to misplace the bag containing preview comics. I loved Remote and was delighted to be able to read more from Double Take.
Slab examines the scientific side of the zombie outbreak by following the work of Dr. Grimes. He is initially shown speaking with reporters about how to make sure that the recently deceased infected don’t return from the dead. After his macabre interview the station decides to send a reporter with him so that they can get up to the minute coverage. While he focuses on the science behind the zombies, his associate Dr. Angela Kifo contacts his daughters and upon the urging of his youngest, decides to pick them up. While she’s away the lab continues running and as the cameras are rolling she and his daughters, Jane and Carol, are shocked when they see what appears to be a doppelganger working with the scientist.

I am a huge fan of Night of the Living Dead and the references within these two comics made me smile. They reference the probe and discuss radiation levels, just like within the movie. The discussion and study of the zombies is an interesting piece to see, especially since I had already seen the interaction Samantha had with these same zombies in Remote. Dr. Grimes is a very brusque man and watching him experiment with really no care for the safety of others interests me. I could actually see him infecting someone for the sake of his work. I am very curious to see just how there are two Dr. Kifos. In Remote we are shown that there are some people with unexpected powers so a shapeshifter is actually something that wouldn’t surprise me. I am definitely going to have to track down the rest of this series and the others within the Double Take universe.
