Let’s take a trip back in time, to 1985, the time of Legend. This happens to be one of my favorite movies and has been for many, many years. It was directed by Ridley Scott and stars a very young Tom Cruise, Mia Sara, and Tim Curry, to name a few. It’s a beautiful fairytale to begin all Legends. I shall tell you about this movie, trying not to give out to many spoilers, I’d rather you see it for yourself. It begins:

“Once long ago, before there was such a thing as time, the world was shrouded in darkness.

Then came the splendor of light, bringing life and love into the Universe, and the Lord of Darkness retreated deep into the shadows of the earth, plotting his return to power…by banishing light forever.

But precious light is protected, harbored in the souls of Unicorns, the most mystical of all creatures.

Unicorns are safe from the Lord of Darkness, they can only be found by the purest of mortals….Such a mortal is Jack, who lives in solitude with the animals of the forest.

A beautiful girl named Lily loves Jack with all her heart. In their innocence, they believe only goodness exists in the world.

Together they will learn there can be no good without evil… No love without hate…. No heaven without hell… No light without darkness.

The harmony of the Universe depends upon an eternal balance. Out of the struggle to maintain this balance comes the birth of Legends.”

Then we step into this most beautiful world and meet Lily, a princess, without a care in the world. Beautiful and sweet, she has “poor folk” as her dearest of friends, she’s everything you could want in a princess. As told on the beginning screen, she is in love with Jack, a woodland boy, who is most in tune with nature, the ways of the forest.

They have the truest of love and because of this he wants to show her something so very magical. He takes her to see the Unicorns. Awe struck, she leaves him to touch one, unknowingly leading goblins the Lord of Darkness has sent out to destroy the light so he may once again rule the earth, straight to them. As she touches one, all hell breaks loose. Jack is angry and tells her is it a mortal sin to touch the magical beast. She apologizes, explaining she did not know, she only wanted to touch it.

After diving off a cliff into some water, due to a challenge, Jack tries to surface only to hit his head on ice. He breaks through calling for his Lily, only she’s no where to be found. The earth is covered in extremely glittery snow. (Between this movie and the Labyrinth, I don’t know how the world still has a supply of glitter) Soon Jack meets up with some elves and a fairy, and together they figure out what has happened to the world.

Lily is captured by the goblins and taken to Darkness. Jack and his friends go on a mission to turn Jack from a boy into a warrior to fight the Darkness and save his beloved. A few secrets and turns that you’ll have to watch and see for yourself. Now when we get to where the Lord of Darkness is residing and he steps out for the first time, it is breathtaking, Tim Curry plays him, but man the makeup and effects are amazing.

Darkness wants Lily for himself, obsessed with her innocence, leading Jack to a choice he is not completely ready to make. The ending is that of a Legend.

If you’re into fantasy, I recommend this movie. The effects are awesome, especially considering this movie was made in the 80’s. It is an ultimate story of the fight between light and dark.
