They’re Here…Finally

This was just a week for movie watching at my house. It’s really easy to do when you work at a video store and have a hard time falling asleep before 4 am, which is only good when you are working night shifts. Not the best plan when you have to function like a normal human being for an opener shift. This week I rented a bunch of random movies, mostly horror, and tried to watch one a night. Our copy of the original Poltergeist finally came in and I jumped on it. I’d never seen the movie and boy was I in for a surprise.

I had thought that since there was a remake done recently that the original Poltergeist wouldn’t be that gory, but that was definitely a terrible misconception to have going in. All I really knew was that a little girl talks to ghosts that are inside her house and that she gets taken by them at some point. While that does happen all of the craziness that happens before and after that shocked the heck out of me. The tree coming to life and attacking the son was insane, though totally made me think of The Evil Dead. Were trees just a common thing used to freak people out in the 80’s? I mean between those two I totally don’t want to go into the woods any time soon.

Besides that there was just so much more blood and grossness than I expected. I mean we see a steak explode, maggots crawl out of a chicken leg, a man thinks he’s tearing his own face off and we watch the entire thing happen, and blood, goo, and viscera came out of the ceiling when they access the ghost dimension. Besides all of that there is the pretty much demonic clown, I mean that thing was creepy before it attacked the son, but that arm thing was terrifying. The skull that pops out of the closet and the white spirit thing that tries to attack the mom were all just crazy. Oh, and the swimming pool full of corpses, yeah that made me never want to go swimming again. Honestly the entire time I watched the movie I just kept thinking this is crazy.

I loved this movie and I really wish I had watched it sooner. I have no clue how they would remake it, okay I kind of have an idea, I’m guessing they amp up the gore even more, but I don’t know that for a fact. If you have seen either Poltergeist I would love to hear your thoughts. You can comment below or tweet at us, @thenerdygirlexp.
