Sunday night I was perusing Netflix and after the typical “I don’t know what I want to watch ten minute scroll” I noticed Aziz Ansari’s adorable face. I thought I’d check out the first episode or two of his new comedy series, Master of None, and then get to bed. Well, one or two episodes wound up turning into a late night full season binge and I regret absolutely nothing about my decision.
As a quick introduction to the series Ansari plays the character Dev, an actor living in New York City who gets into some hilarious situations with his friends and sometimes family members. Dev’s character reminds me a little bit of Tom from Parks and Rec, which is definitely a good thing. Besides Dev, the other characters are equally hilarious. The cast is pretty small, but Denise and Arnold appear pretty frequently as Dev’s go to friends. Denise is played by Lena Waithe and she is pretty much my favorite character. Her lines are so well delivered and she continuously cracked me up. She also has a really cool wardrobe, I totally couldn’t pull off those hats the way that she does. Eric Wareheim is Arnold and he gets into some ridiculous situations. One involves a bounce house and another involves a furry robotic seal. Dev’s parents are portrayed by Ansari’s real life parents and they are great. I would have loved to see them in more episodes. Oh, and H. Jon Benjamin shows up periodically and any time I can hear the voice of Archer and Bob in something else is fabulous.
The show isn’t just funny, but it also works to examine social issues. There are episodes devoted to racism within the entertainment industry, as well as just in day to day life, and sexism. The episode on sexism shows different ways in which men and women experience day to day life. In both cases the topics are serious, but the show still maintains a level of humor. The last two episodes I thought were a bit more emotional than the others. They focused more on the relationship between Dev and his girlfriend Rachel, played by Noel Wells. She had appeared throughout the series, but in these episodes the two are dealing with milestones like moving in together, meeting the parents, and the idea of marriage.
You can definitely binge this series in a night if you really want to. There are only ten episodes and each is a little bit under 30 minutes. I really enjoyed the show and literally couldn’t stop watching it. Though it did make me want to rewatch Sherlock about halfway through, when you watch it you’ll see why. I definitely recommend that you check out Master of None as soon as you can.
