Tuesday, November 17th, Guy Ritchie’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E. will be out on dvd and blu-ray. This reboot of the original television series of the same name shows us Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer teamed up as part of a CIA/KGB operation to stop a nuclear bomb from being created. These men are also expected to bring back the plans for their respective agencies. Now that sort of plot sounds like something you’d expect in a Soviet Era spy movie, but there is so much more going on that makes this exciting and new.
This version of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is actually a prequel instead of just a traditional reboot. I didn’t watch the original series, but when you watch this movie you’ll notice that neither Henry Cavill’s Napoleon Solo or Armie Hammer’s Illya Kuryakin are working for U.N.C.L.E. for most of the film. There are lots of twists and turns in the plot so I can’t give much of the plot away without ruining anything, but our spies find themselves not only working for their own organizations, but also connected to U.N.C.L.E. during their mission.
The movie had some great action sequences, including boat chases, car chases, and some really cool shoot outs. What was really cool to learn was that Hammer and Cavill filmed a number of their own stunts, including one involving Cavill escaping from a submerged truck. Besides action there are some really funny moments. Two of which took place in bathrooms, they are hilarious I swear.
I though do have a couple personal comments about Cavill and Hammer. Both of them were great in this movie, they really sold their characters. Hammer did a great Russian accent throughout the movie and Cavill definitely sounded like an American playboy. Henry Cavill though distracted the heck out of me. That man is just too dang pretty. He looks like a sculpture brought to life or like some alien race created the perfect human and sent him here to assimilate into our culture. Maybe he is actually from Krypton. I see you Superman, pretending to be an actor playing Superman. The other thing that distracted me was how tall Armie Hammer is. He’s 6′ 5”! He’s taller than Superman! I just don’t know how he fits into cars or doorways, or movie screens. I had no idea he was that tall until I saw him in this movie.
I had fun watching The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and if you haven’t seen it yet I definitely think you should give it a watch if you can. Even if you aren’t normally into action movies you can marvel at the two male leads and look at all the other gorgeous things around them.
