One of my favorite things to listen to is the podcast, Welcome to Night Vale. If you haven’t heard of it you are definitely missing out on something great. Not only is it a podcast, but they do live shows and have just recently published a book. With the weather getting colder now seems like a great time to bundle up and listen to this great series.
Welcome to Night Vale is produced by Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor, who also wrote the book with the same title that just came out in October. Each episode is a radio broadcast from the Night Vale radio station and the voice of Night Vale is Cecil Palmer, voiced by Cecil Baldwin. The best way to describe it is to say say it’s like Twin Peaks meets public radio. What you are hearing sounds a bit bizarre, but in the city of Night Vale it’s all totally normal. You learn all about the Secret Police, the dog park you can never enter, and the hooded figures.
Every episode has a plot that is normally resolved within the twenty or so minutes that each of them last. There are a few two part episodes and all of the live episodes are about an hour. There are tons of guest stars, including Wil Wheaton, who was most recently in their Thanksgiving episode that went up on November 15th. As of right now there are 78 episodes, though this doesn’t include the live episodes or the one Desert Bluffs/Night Vale double episode.
I didn’t start listening to the series until two years ago, but it’s super easy to catch up. They have an official YouTube channel and you can find the episodes there if you don’t use iTunes very frequently. You can also find them on loads of other sites. I love this series and not only is the writing great, each episode has music by different artists. You should definitely give it a listen. Just get comfy and go on a trip to Night Vale, you’ll be glad you did.
