Do You Know The Ten Commandment Killer?

AHS: Hotel returned from Thanksgiving break with The Ten Commandments Killer. The episode started right where the last left off, showing us John standing helpless beside the road as the young blond girl he found at the mental institution ran out in front of a bus. Traffic around her stopped and all the people said that she was dead.

John confronts Liz Taylor in the Hotel and insists that she knows who the killer is. Hypodermic Sally says that she’ll take him to where the killer has been hiding, Liz gives them a gun, just in case they find what they’re looking for. She unlocks room 64, which she insists holds the answers. She says that James Patrick March’s office was there and that this is where he died on February 25th at 2:25 am. When he pushes her she tells him that the answers are behind the armoire. There is a secret room full of body parts in jars, trophies from all the killings that span the years. She says that the lull lasted for 90 years because it took March that long to find a successor. Sally then provides the biggest twist of all, that the killer let himself into the room because he had a key, which means that  John is the Ten Commandments Killer.

The police are looking for John after he fled the scene of the accident and he appears at the morgue. He says he wants to confess his crimes, his old partner says that John couldn’t have been involved in the killings because he hadn’t been to The Cortez until just three weeks before. John then says he knows that isn’t true now. He had actually been there a few years before after they investigated a crime scene involving a father who killed his entire family and then killed himself. We then get a flashback of what happened when John checked in for the first time. Donovan invited him to an after party upstairs, which is actually the monthly March dinner. Mr. March was enraged, but Donovan introduced him to John and he wants to know all about him. March decides to bond with John over drinks and informs him that he is full of rage and has a black aura. They spent two days drinking and talking and March made him into his perfect protege. He says that John controls himself so much because he knows if he lets go that he will fall into the abyss. Mr. March then told The Countess about John’s children and they made a plan to destroy his sense of hope by taking his son away.

After his son disappeared John says that he was never more alone than when he was home with his wife after the volunteers left. He said he would go to the Hotel Cortez to spend time with James March because time passed so much more quickly there. He spent five years living two separate lives between his home and the Hotel. March showed him his trophy room, though only by candlelight. He shows him the mounted head of his accountant and tells John that he should join him and escape from the weight pressing down on him. After a murder case was dismissed on a technicality he went back to The Cortez to see March. He shows John pictures of a young boy that Mrs. Evers found in a man’s room and then he sent John after him. John’s partner told him that they worked that man’s case together and that he wasn’t a pedophile. John though says that he had other sins and reveals that he killed the guest Mr. March told him about. He then tried to kill himself in The Cortez by hanging himself in the bathroom.

Apparently Sally had been watching him every time he went to The Cortez and the two of them eventually became lovers. Mr. March though had to cut him down because Sally wanted to make John part of the Hotel. She promised to help John and do anything that Mr. March needed her to do to make sure that she would get to have him forever once the killings were done. John began to forget everything he had done within The Cortez because Sally insisted that the Hotel is selfish and won’t let you keep everything. Mr. March then revealed his Ten Commandments trophies and sent him out to finish his work

John’s partner is pretty sure John has lost it and we learn that he and Alex had coffee, which drove John even crazier. He wanted to kill them both, but Sally told him that he couldn’t do that. She instead sent him after the adulterers we saw in the first episode. He saw them at The Cortez and sent them texts from each other’s phones to get them to a different hotel. His partner really thinks he’s lost it and is just saying all of this because the death of the girl sent him over the edge. He insists John isn’t a killer, which leads John to stab him not once, but twice in the morgue. He also takes a souvenir from the man who coveted his wife and returns to the Hotel. Iris is exceptionally relieved that he finally knows he’s the killer and tells him that the girl was sent by Sally to protect him. He and March marvel at the newest addition to the Ten Commandments trophies and John says he just has two more left.

Next week is supposed to be a wedding, but Angela Bassett will be back and she wants to make sure The Countess doesn’t make it to the wedding. It should be pretty intense and I’m really excited that she’ll be back for a full episode. It looks like everything is just going to keep getting crazier this season.

  1. Great review! I knew someone from the hotel was the 10 Commandments Killer, but I was thinking it was Johns wife or someone else. It was a great twist.
