It’s Alive, Alive!

A wizard and a mutant walk into a bar and meet a criminal mastermind, okay that’s not actually the plot of Victor Frankenstein, but come on I couldn’t resist the references. The movie Victor Frankenstein stars a pretty impressive cast, three of my favorite actors appear in some pretty major roles, and I was just able to go see it. If you’ve been thinking about seeing this movie or have already seen it, check out my review to see what I thought of this supernatural action drama.

I’m going to try and stay spoiler free for most of the article, but there are a couple things I’m going to tell you that might be considered spoilers to some people. I will tell you that Daniel Radcliffe’s Igor did actually start the movie as a hunchback, well sort of. We learn he had been working for a circus all of his life and that on the night he met Victor Frankenstein, James McAvoy, that he escaped and began a new life. Frankenstein gives Igor a new start and involves him in his plans to create life. Igor is actually exceptionally talented in the medical field and we find him doing most of Frankenstein’s work. Without Igor I’m honestly not sure if Frankenstein would have been able to make a man. Frankenstein is obsessed with his plan and while Igor finds himself wanting to do other things with his new life, he constantly finds himself drawn back to Victor.

The plot for this movie is honestly a bit lackadaisical. There isn’t a real climax, but we do see how obsession can drive a person. There is also the discussion of God and creation, which is a fundamental point within the original novel. You can trust me on that I read the Cliffs Notes version, because kleffnotes reading Cliffs Notes seemed hilarious to me.

While the plot is a little bit goofy, the acting is wonderful. Daniel Radcliffe is able to portray the sweet, caring, and remarkably intelligent Igor in a way that made him wonderful to watch. He also was able to move convincingly as a man dealing with a physical deformity. James McAvoy as Frankenstein was pretty much just hilarious to watch. The character is insane and I’m pretty sure heavily intoxicated throughout the movie, which seemed so different from the other roles I’ve seen him play. He was also able to move between that goofy persona to one that was more brooding and emotional in certain scenes. Andrew Scott, who I absolutely love as Moriarty in Sherlock, played a character that while obsessive, was extremely religious and dedicated to stopping what he believed to be the unholy work of Victor and Igor. Scott portrayed a wonderful Victorian inspired detective, very Sherlock, and was definitely a larger character than I anticipated.

I had fun watching the movie, but I would consider waiting for it to go to dvd or online. I think it would be more fun to watch it with friends in a place where you can have snacks and be silly. I watched it with my sister and while we had some tasty popcorn, sitting in the theater wasn’t as fun as live tweeting the movie or talking about it together would have been. Also they totally turned off the heat during our showing and we got really cold about halfway through. If you enjoyed movies like Van Helsing, The Brothers Grimm, or Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters I think you would have a great time watching this movie.
