Why Santa Claus Conquers the Martians Should Be Added to Your Christmas List

If you haven’t heard of the movie Santa Claus Conquers the Martians then you are seriously missing out. This movie made in 1964 is the goofiest holiday movie I have ever seen and I oddly love it. I mean it’s Santa in space, what isn’t great about that.

The plot of the movie is a bit out there. Martian children are obsessed with Earth television and while they are watching it an interview with Santa Claus airs. The father of two of these children is the chief Martian and his children’s obsession leads him to seek out and capture the jolly old elf of the North Pole so that Mars can have him. While on Earth the Martian leader and his men also capture two children and hilarity ensues. There’s a trip to the North Pole with a robot and a polar bear, a goofy Martian who impersonates Santa, an evil villain, and a toy related attack scene. The whole thing is just nonsensical and filmed in the weirdest filter ever, sort of like kaleidoscope sepia tones. The soundtrack is also just strange, so many creepy little voices singing about Santa. Though it’s weird watching it never fails to make me laugh.

Not only is the original just ridiculously funny, but the Mystery Science Theater 3000 version from 1991 is great. Not only are the comments about the movie great, but the little segments are all holiday themed. We get to hear a song about a Patrick Swayze Christmas, see some ridiculous gifts, and Tom Servo and Crow are even decked out with decorations. I own both versions on dvd, but I’m sure you could find them online. They just make for a great watch, especially if you are stressing out about holiday stuff in any way.
