So Many Feels in Sense8

Yes, the title is a bit of a pun, but don’t let that dissuade you. The Netflix original series Sense8 has been on Netflix for a while, but I just got a chance to watch it. I hadn’t expected to finish it this week, but the series sucked me in and I sacrificed sleep because I needed to know what would happen next. If you haven’t started watching this show here’s my spoiler free insistence that you should.

The first episode of the season drops you right into the action with limited explanation. That’s actually a great thing, just like the characters you are being thrown into something you don’t quite understand. In that moment eight people’s lives change dramatically. They start seeing things and hearing voices, which admittedly would scare the crap out of me, as well as feeling emotions that don’t make sense to them. The eight sensates are spread throughout the world and through their connection are able to connect in ways that normal people cannot. While just watching the characters come to grips with their new abilities would make for an amazing story that’s not all we see. A man who goes by many names, one of which is Whispers, is hunting them and working to destroy them. There is a core plot as well as eight separate stories for each character. My best description would be like experiencing interlocking short stories. I love short stories so that’s another reason I think I like this show.

The acting in this show is absolutely amazing. The eight sensates are each performed magnificently by their respective actors, but beyond that the supporting cast is remarkable. I loved Freema Agyeman in Doctor Who and was super excited to see her in Sense8. She plays the girlfriend of one of the sensates, Nomi, and fully embraces everything that is going on. She puts herself at risk to help not just the woman she loves, but the other sensates as well. I know a lot has been written about this series already, but I still wanted to share my thoughts because it was such a great show. I will say that there is a lot of fighting and a lot of sex. I was completely fine with it, the scenes were really well filmed, but I know that sometimes that can make people uncomfortable.
