Stop Everything and Go Watch Trainwreck

I had the pleasure and surprise to watch the movie Trainwreck a while ago when a friend had rented it from the RedBox. We knew it was an off color, raunchy comedy and that it had funny lady Amy Schumer and wrestler/sometimes actor John Cena in it. Within the first thirty minutes I thought for sure that I would wet my pants from laughing so hard. Keep reading to see my review!

The movie starts with Amy Schumer’s character being told that monogamy isn’t realistic by her father who is obviously going through a divorce because he was caught cheating. While her sister doesn’t take his words to heart, Amy takes them to heart. She grows up believing it’s not a possibility and that anyone who does believe in it is a fool.

We see all sorts of men fall for her and she has one night stands with them and then leaves. This is always played for laughs and Amy certainly pulls it off. It was also refreshing to see the woman doing the leaving for a change. Sorry fellas, it’s got to be really old in the movies watching the playboy learn his lesson. Amy makes no apologies about her behavior and instead focuses on her journalism work for a men’s gossip magazine.

She does sort of date one man, Steven (played by John Cena). She at least goes out on real dates with him on a regular basis, which is far more dedicated than she is with any other man. John Cena is hilarious in his role as a dumb jock that keeps saying really wrong things. You sadly only see Steven in the beginning of the film as the two breakup and by the end of the movie I was sad we never got to see any more of his character. Seriously standing ovation to you John Cena, you half made that movie in twenty minutes of screen time.

Amy gets stuck with a boring story at work where she has to interview a sports medicine doctor of famous athletes. Meanwhile we also get to see some of Amy’s home life. Her dad has to be put into a home and Amy and her sister are going through his things. Amy is much more sentimental over his things, but her sister is not and ends up throwing a lot of it away. She even wants to put him in a cheaper nursing home. This has a lot to do with the fact that Amy idolizes their father while her sister Kim, has always resented him. You get to meet Amy and Kim’s dad as Amy regularly visits him. He really is kind of a dick.

Amy meets up with the doctor, Aaron Conners (played by Bill Hader). Amy is her immature self and Hader is obviously playing the straight man to this comedy duo. I actually didn’t care for the character very much. He is always too serious and it didn’t work for me in such a funny movie. I blame John Cena.

The two end up sort of together and then really together when Amy realizes she has actual feelings for him. They have some funny moments and some really sad moments, but the movie loses a lot of comedic steam when it decides to become a rom-com halfway through. Boo-hiss.

I mostly boo because Amy is hilarious and I missed seeing her antics. Also I just didn’t care for Hader’s character throughout the entire film. I felt while Amy was being immature and needed to grow up and finally takes steps to do so; he was constantly looking down on her. Not exactly the kind of person you want your heroine to end up with, you know? Also he had his own dating issues, and it was even addressed in a hilarious ‘intervention’ but he never actually worked on them or became better. Amy’s character is always dynamic while his is static and it really showed during the second half of the film.

Amy also has to deal with a huge fallout with her sister. They were both in the wrong and it was good to see a happy ending between them and for Amy to embrace her sister and her square little family. So did Amy finally grow up and end up with the doctor? You’ll just have to watch to find out. All I will tell you is that you’ll definitely end up ‘cheering’ for her.

The director of this film was Judd Apatow. If you don’t recognize the name, you will his other movies: Anchorman, Bridesmaids, SuperBad, Talladega Nights and so many more. He is so talented and if I had just been able to like the Aaron character in this movie I would have given this all the stars. Still it is a really great movie and I think all of you need to go and check it out as soon as possible.

Need more incentive? You also get hilarious performances from some famous athletes; Chris Evert, Amar’e Stoudemire and best of all LeBron James who I didn’t know is actually very funny and has some amazing scenes playing Aaron’s best friend. A few other famous faces make appearances and really everyone is on point in this movie, even the funny side characters. If you like to laugh and aren’t too easily offended by some jokes then you will love this movie and I highly recommend it. The time is now! (Sorry, not sorry-I just had to reference John Cena one last time)
