Our Brand is Crisis Review from @kleffnotes

Our Brand is Crisis, starring Sandra Bullock and Billy Bob Thornton, about a presidential race in Bolivia, might look like an intense political drama, but there’s so much more going on in it. The movie was surprisingly funny and shows a new side of Bullock that I wasn’t expecting.

The movie opens and closes with Bullock being interviewed about her career as a political campaign manager. While discussing the Bolivia campaign we learn she was retired from the business for six years following a lot of bad press, including a brief stint in the Betty Ford Clinic, like less than 24 hours brief. Anthony Mackie, who I most notably recognized as The Falcon from the Marvel franchise, is the head of Senator Castillo’s presidential campaign in Bolivia and because they are super behind in the polls one of his team members Nell, Ann Dowd, has them go get Bullock’s character, Jane, from her isolated home. Nell insists that Jane will get them a win and even if she doesn’t they are so far behind it won’t matter.  Jane agrees to join the campaign, but only starts caring about winning when she learns Pat Candy, Billy Bob Thornton, is the manager for the current leader in the polls. The two have a history and it leads Jane to get a bit crazy.

We watch the course of the campaign and get to see what happens when the election ends. Seriously the movie is way funnier than it immediately sounds. Jane has a bad reaction to traveling to Bolivia, which includes needing an oxygen tank and throwing up while in a meeting with the entire Castillo campaign team. Besides that she gets drunk with a bunch of young men and they torment Candy for an entire night with a fitted sheet and bra slingshot. She also moons a bus, which was just the cherry on top of an intense car chase involving some crazy cliff driving.

Our Brand is Crisis was surprisingly funny, though I will say the ending gets pretty intense. I really enjoyed Bullock and her character was great. She’s constantly snacking and does not care at all what people think about her. Also her pant suit wearing skills are top notch. I’d give the movie about a 6.5, 7 if we were getting numerical.
