For International Women’s Day, I’d like to acknowledge the strong Villanueva women of The CW’s Jane the Virgin.
According to Wikipedia: International Women’s Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women’s Day, is celebrated on March 8 every year. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation, and love towards women for their economic, political, and social achievements.
Acknowledgment should be given to the strong Latina women of Jane the Virgin. They help to show that through faith, courage and family support, nothing is impossible.
Alba, Xiomara and Jane Villanueva (portrayed by Ivonne Coll, Andrea Navedo and Gina Rodriguez) represent three generations of women who have each seen their own challenges but have remained steadfast in their determination to succeed.
Alba, the matriarch of the family, moved with her husband to the United States in order to ensure a better life for her daughter, Xiomara. She is familiar with sacrifice and has encouraged her daughter and granddaughter Jane to never give up on their dreams. Alba’s dream was to become an American citizen, which she recently accomplished. The scene when Alba finally gets her green card was a heartwarming moment of truimph.
Xiomara (Xo) postponed her dreams when she became a teenage mother to Jane. Now, she finally pursuing her long delayed singing career.
Jane has a dream of being a writer. She was sidetracked when she was accidentally inseminated. Nonetheless, Jane is continuing her education. Viewers have no doubt that a writing career will happen for Jane.
Thanks, Ivonne, Andrea and Gina for being positive role models for women everywhere.
