I’ve written about comic books on The Nerdy Girl Express before, but I am very much a sort of comic dabbler. I buy random comic books that I think sound interesting, but I am very rarely caught up on what is cool and new in the comics world. I have been going to my comic book store more frequently and buying volumes of series that I have been interested in reading. During one of my most recent trips I found the first volume of Lumberjanes and I wanted to share my thoughts on this award winning comic.

The Lumberjanes are a kickbutt group of scouts, think Girl Scouts with extra pizzazz, who keep finding themselves in some pretty intense supernatural situations. There are sea monsters, yetis, three eyed foxes, and some randomly rabid scouting lads. Each section of the graphic novel is based around a specific badge the girls are earning; The Up All Night Badge, The Naval Gauging Badge, The Everything Under the Sum Badge, and The Robyn Hood Badge are the main ones in this book. My favorite one gets a special write up in the back, The Pungeon Master Badge. I really want that badge, actually can I just get a Lumberjanes sash with all the patches? Let me know if that’s a thing because I will be on that like syrup on pancakes.

This series is written by Noelle Stevenson and Grace Ellis and illustrated by Brooke Allen. The dialogue in Lumberjanes is hilarious. The girls don’t curse, but they say things like “What the junk?” and exclaim the names of important female figures in history, including Juliette Gordon Low in one sequence. The art is also great in this series, I love looking at it and finding all the extra details, like the tattoos on Rosie for example. I’m always on the lookout for new stuff to read with awesome female characters and I love all the ladies of Lumberjanes. Also Mal and Molly, adorable! I need to go back and buy more Lumberjanes because I really need to know what else is happening with everyone at Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penninquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady-Types.
