Interview with Actress Chrissy Metz (@ChrissyMetz) with @kleffnotes

I recently had the chance to interview the wonderful actress Chrissy Metz, noted by WiSHCon for her role in American Horror Story: Freakshow. She took the time to answer questions not just about her time on the show, but also on her experiences as an actor. I really appreciate her taking the time to speak with me.

What inspired you to become an actor?

I was so enamored with The Little Mermaid, I actually wore the VHS tape out. I still know every line of that nostalgic masterpiece. While all my friends fought over who was going to be Ariel in our backyard reenactment, I was obsessing over Pat Carroll and her perfect performance of aggressively charming sea witch, Ursula. All I wanted to do was talk and sing like her.

When you were first starting out what sort of projects did you look for?

Any project! As an “aspiring” actor there isn’t much luxury of choice. You’re lucky enough to be remotely right for something. I did and do gravitate towards the comedy. I’m also always interested in complex characters with accents.

What have been some of the challenges you’ve faced along the way?

My entire family living 3000 miles away has been difficult. We are all very close. They are my support system with perspective and boundless encouragement.

I also think the mental and emotional toll it takes on a person can be very challenging. You have to be so grounded and sure of your hearts desires to pursue this career.

Additionally, being a plus sized actress has its obvious obstacles but what occupation doesn’t?

What was the process like auditioning for AHS: Freak Show?

I got a call from my agent for the audition, prepped all night long to be off book for the morning. The sides were actually from a previous season. It was fun trying to make it my own while cultivating the voice and essence of Barbara.

I went in and read for casting and waited about a week. It felt good but you never, ever know. You’ve got to go and forget about it. Luckily I did hear about it and booked the job!

Were you intimidated to be joining the cast of a show that had been together for three seasons already?

I was elated to watch master actors in their element.  Sure it can be nerve wracking to be the new girl starting a new school her senior year but the professionalism and preparation won out. Thank goodness!

What did you enjoy most about working on Freakshow?

How can I choose? The theme in Freakshow was so beautiful. The desire to be a part of and accepted for what we are is what each one of us wants. Everyone can relate to that. Not to mention the incredible behind the camera talent it takes to make such incredible art frame my frame.

Any word if you’ll be involved in any upcoming season?

That is a Ryan Murphy question!

If you can share, what are some of the current projects you are working on?

I recently wrapped a lead in a wonderfully written and directed  pilot. I know, such a cryptic answer!

If you could perform any role, what would it be?

Of course Ursula, the ever loving Tracy Turnblad and any role I don’t think I’m capable of portraying. I do love a challenge.

What would you say to anyone aspiring to become an actor?

Read, write, watch everything, observe, live, love, travel. Hustle, remain humble, train, commit and never, ever give up.

You can see Chrissy Metz on Friday, November 18th, at WiSHCon. For more details about WiSHCon check out their website, wishcon.org, and to get your tickets go to wishcon.ticketleap.com. You can also find them on Twitter, @WISHConOfficial.
