Spin-offs are mutually advantageous for a network and its viewers. If a network can capture the magic of a parent show yet put an ingenious spin (pardon the pun) on the newest creation, it will have the ingredients for a successful spin-off.
Viewer loyalty is the key. For every successful spin-off, there are those that failed. For every Angel (a spin-off of Buffy), there is the Colbys (a spin-off of Dynasty). I was a teen in the 1980s and I loved Dynasty. I thought that The Colbys was good and had potential. However, the show couldn’t sustain interest. The Colbys only aired for a few seasons.
Some potential spin-offs don’t even get a pilot order. Supernatural has one of the most passionate, loyal fans around. But the possible spin-off Bloodlines failed to generate excitement. The prevailing sentiment was that a show about five monster families seeking control in Chicago didn’t pass muster.
Part of the problem with Bloodlines is that the characters introduced on a Supernatural episode didn’t endear themselves with the fan base.
Now is the chance to get it right with a Supernatural spin-off. Characters Jesse and Cesar, introduced in a recent episode The Chitters and played to perfection by actors Lee Rumohr and Hugo Ateo, need their own spin-off. Social media continues to buzz with well-deserved accolades for these wonderful performers. A same sex hunting couple might make network executives who worship at the altar of advertising gods nervous. But perhaps, we need to give advertisers and viewers more credit. A well-executed show with intriguing characters and plots is what viewers want. This show would be watched. Advertising dollars would be earned.
Jesse and Cesar have retired from hunting and have settled into a life of domestic tranquillity raising horses. Yet, we all know that supernatural evil doesn’t retire. These caring, veteran hunters could find the allure of hunting and the desire to save people too powerful to resist. Or, hunting brothers Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) might need extra hands on a case and decide to call Jesse and Cesar.
There are so many possibilities. The time is ripe for a Supernatural spin-off. Jesse and Cesar could give the network spin-off gold.
