Freelance writer Nelly Morgan’s wedding should have been the happiest day of her life. Instead, the bride is shocked when a mysterious man storms through the church door, professes his love for love and claims that they know each other. Not exactly the memorable moment that a blushing bride desires. The wedding crasher sends Nelly’s life in a tailspin producing a domino effect that has unforeseen consequences for her and the people in her life.
Author Vivian Brooks has created a delightful Chick Lit experience with her marvelous book All Because of You. To begin, the title of the book is ingenious and very appropriate. The “you” in the book’s title could easily refer to Mr. Wedding Crasher himself, a mechanic named Ben Mcquire. Has the luck of the Irish smiled upon its native son Ben that allowed his and Nelly’s lives to so profoundly intersect? Or, was their meeting a perversion of Fate, a cruelty destined to destroy Nelly’s relationship with fiance Guy Emerson? Surely, Nelly believes that if it hadn’t been for Ben, she and Guy would be sailing on smooth matrimonial waters.
Brooks does a fabulous job writing Nelly. Nelly is determined to salvage her relationship(after Guy announces that they’re on break and postpones their wedding) by finding the identity of the wedding crasher (which she does) and demanding that he admit that he lied about them knowing each other. Yet, as the story progresses, Nelly herself becomes increasingly conflicted over whether she and Guy belong together.
Ben could have easily been viewed as the antagonist in this narrative. However, Brooks is a writing powerhouse who skillfully realized that more interesting story potential could be mined by endearing Ben to the reader. If the reader initially hates Ben for crashing Nelly’s wedding, this negative sentiment is fleeting. The reader will be seduced by Ben’s charm and happily surprised when they see the depths of his feelings for Nelly and how he proves to be her ally on more than one occasion.
This book offers a comedy of errors that keeps the reader fully invested and fully committed to watching the various plots unfold. What makes the comedy of errors satisfying in All Because of You is that Nelly has the help of her two best friends, Jake and Max. This trio (literally and figuratively partners in crime) are no Charlie’s Angels but their antics are worthy of applause. Both Jake and Max advance the central plot of Nelly’s story. Yet, each woman is interesting in her own right.
Supporting characters Guy and his evil sister Jenny (yes, Jenny is evil. I won’t spoil the plot to tell you why), Nelly’s mother and her sister Katie all add beautiful textures to this tale of betrayal, self-discovery and ultimately, triumph. For the animal lovers, Brooks gives readers Nelly’s cat Dexter. This feline is no interloper. Rather, Dexter also becomes a focal point in the plot.
If you want to laugh. If you want to cry. If you want suspense, then All Because of You offers all of these ingredients. This book is the perfect recipe to feed the reader’s appetite for a satisfying meal of fictional excellence.
