What would you do if you found yourself in possession of Nikola Tesla’s infamous death ray? In Raygun ten year old Matthew has managed to get his hands on this specific weapon and the government is very worried.
The Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) has finally been given the ability to go after whoever stole Tesla’s dangerous death ray in Raygun #3. After collecting a group of additional support, they are heading out to fingerprint every boy between the ages of 10 and 12 from the specific elementary schools who recently attended an exhibit showcasing the device. There were recently three felons admitted to a local hospital after the discharge of the ray gun and finally the SDI has a description of the boy who has it.

Not only is there an investigation going on, but Matthew finally learns why his robotic engineering father hasn’t been around for much of his young life. While fixing some very cool robotic dinosaurs, his dad reveals that he was in Afghanistan serving as a bomb technician after Matthew was born and then after a year to focus on his mental health, he tried to come back to the family he left at home. He was surprised to find that Matthew’s mother had moved on and wasn’t given as much visitation as he had hoped. Now he’s trying to repair their relationship, but Matthew is dealing with the unexpected pressure of having to get away from government agents. After running away from fingerprinting, the comic ends with the ten year old trapped by a squadron of SDI agents.

There is definitely a lot going on in Raygun #3, but I was drawn into all the drama unfolding within Matthew’s crazy world. For a ten year old boy he is dealing with a pretty full plate and I really want to know what happens to him next. I also have a fondness for Tesla and knowing that the death ray is what got Matthew into this mess makes me smile.
