A few years ago, one of my little sisters recommended The Mortal Instruments, after I was asking about a new series to dive into. By chapter two of the first book I was hooked. I couldn’t wait to finish it and begin the next. When I heard they were turning the books into a TV series I was beyond thrilled. Though the movie didn’t quite fulfill the greatness of the book, I was hopeful the television show would. This article is of my own opinion and not that of TheNerdyGirlExpress.

Cassandra Clare’s books captivated me with the mix of the mundane world (normal, human) and the supernatural world. We follow Clary as she searches for a way to save her mother from impeding death by the dark force called Valentine. Here we enter the shadowhunter world, as we and Clary discover her true identity as well as the truth about her and her mother’s past. Clary gains the help of Jace, Alec, Isabelle, and the warlock Magnus, along with others, as she learns she is a shadowhunter, like her mother. Now I know there’s much more to the story, but that’s for another article.

After watching the first season of Shadowhunters, I am finally prepared to give my opinion on this show.

The cast is absolutely brilliant. Kat McNamara is perfect as Clary. She makes me feel how I felt reading the books. I feel how scared she is. I feel how no matter how much that fear frightens her, she’s not going to give up. I feel the strength she possess. You feel the passion, the love, the friendship, the loyalty from the book. Kat has truly brought Clary to life.

Dominic Sherwood is a great Jace. He embodies the cockiness and loyalty of Jace. You can see the front that Jace puts up and the fear behind that front. He shows the passion you read on the pages.

I don’t think they could have picked a better Alec! Matthew Daddario portrays a very true to book version of Alec. You feel the love he has for Jace. You feel the pride he has for his family. You can see the difficult choices in his eyes. You see and feel a real true love between him and Magnus, which is truly beautiful, being a first love reciprocated love for Alec.

If there was anyone born to play a role, it would be Harry Shum Jr. as Magnus. Never have I wanted to hang out with a character more! Harry is so much fun. He brings Magnus’ personality to life. He knows what he wants and is not afraid to reach out and get it. However, he will not wait around for you to make decisions while there’s life to be lived.

Is there a more adorable Simon than Alberto Rosende???? He is exactly how I pictured Simon! I can’t wait for his character to be expanded. I am sincerely looking for to it. From being Clary’s best friend forever in the friend zone to really coming into his own after a faithful time with a beautiful vampire, the transition is marvelous.

I really dig the sassy Emeraude Toubia as Isabelle. She has the attitude and beauty described. She fights for what’s right and she really brings to light the hard decisions this crew has to make. Through her, you can feel her character is the glue that’s holding everyone together. Though some might not see her that way, I do.

A magnificent choice in casting is Isaiah Mustafa as Luke. He really shows the way Luke feels about Clary and her mother. You feel his protective nature of his girls, as well as the pack. He looks out for everyone that means something to Clary. He’s not just the tough guy protector, he is the true father of Clary.

Alan Van Sprang as Valentine, wow, yes, please, give me more!! Only Alan could make you crush on such a horrible man as Valentine! From Alan’s portrayal, I can almost understand why Valentine did what he did. I definitely understand his evilness, his anger a little more.

I have fallen in love with this “almost true to book” television series. I am truly impressed with how well the cast and crew has interpreted this story. These actors are so much fun to watch, you get completely involved with them. During that hour, you lose all track of the real world wishing you could be by Clary’s side, fighting the good fight. I’m excited to see what season two has to bring us. The cast keeps teasing on Twitter as well as other forms of social media.
