The IF 2016 Anthology from Alterna Comics is great collection of such diverse comics that I couldn’t just write one review of it. One of the aspects within this work that I really enjoyed was the inclusion of comics that don’t include traditional heroes or traditional superhero stories. I thought I’d highlight some of these works for you, in case you aren’t normally a capes and cowls sort of reader, to show you that this anthology is still something you should be checking out.
While this story might be about a man in a mask and cape, Hamster Man, is a fun story that reminded me a bit of The Incredibles. He just acts like normal guy, who wants to help out his town, in between ironing his costume and cleaning up around the house. Super Anonymous was a story that surprised me tremendously. While at first it looks like a collection of heroes are just spending some time together working through their issues there is a far more Arkhamesque quality to the piece. The twist that appeared right at the very end made me chuckle and I hadn’t thought it was coming.
The title, We Can Be Heroes, initially looks like it has nothing to do with heroes, but don’t let the adorable bunnies fool you. A man minding his own business leaps into action when the life of one of his rabbits is placed in peril. While this is a small story, it shows the heroics of real people. This little rabbit is just one of many, but his life matters to the man taking care of him. The story that I found the most touching was Loser, Nobody. It focuses on how a woman is able to finally find relief from her depression by meeting a woman named Jane. It shows that one person, no matter who they are, can make a huge difference in the life of someone else.
These are just some of the wonderful comics within The IF 2016 Anthology. I’ll be doing a few more reviews of the anthology to focus on some of the more kid friendly comics and some of the more traditional superhero comics as well.
