There’s just one week until Halloween and it’s the perfect time to check out the frightening horror comic, Draw Blood: A Horror Anthology. This comic has a supernatural story for any horror fan.
Draw Blood is made up of six stories, five from Hannu Kesola and the sixth comic is by Lee Newman. The first story in the anthology, The Endless Walk, puts the reader in the mind of a zombie. Shambling zombies appear in a lot of comics, this story creates something I had never seen before. Our narrating zombie still has his human mental faculties, but has no control over what his body does. All he wants is an end to his eternal punishment, even though his body craves human flesh. I absolutely loved this story and found the story to be something new and inventive.
Back from the Dead and Death of Brian, the fourth and sixth stories, also focus on zombies. Back from the Dead is set during a zombie apocalypse and focuses on a man who has a terminal illness. He has been dying for such a long time that the idea of living forever is something he desperately wants. The Death of Brian, the story by Lee Newman, is a sad take on returning from the dead. Brian, the zombie in question, digs himself out of his grave, but does not find the reception he anticipates. Both of these were interesting takes on zombie story lines.
Even a Man Who is Pure is a sci-fi comic that takes an unexpected turn right at the very end. It starts on an intergalactic prison transfer ship traveling from Mars to Saturn. One prisoner keeps insisting that he can’t be moved to Saturn and the reason why will definitely surprise you. In The Animal in Me a mother has taken her sick child to the doctor, but this visit turns deadly with one dose of medicine. There’s not one twist, but three in this comic and I didn’t see any of them coming. The Last Laugh is the story of Mary Elkins, a doomsday prepper. She has been preparing for the end of the world and has found herself ridiculed by her entire town. They might think she’s crazy, but you’ll see just who gets the last laugh.
I enjoyed this comic, especially the zombie comics. These inventive new takes on the shambling undead were wonderful. I also really enjoyed the look of this comic, particularly in the apocalypse focused stories. I definitely think horror fans should check out this comic, especially with Halloween coming soon.
