Believe in Hope

What would you do if you had it all, then suddenly after one tragic event, you lost everything?

I had the pleasure of watching Southpaw this past weekend and right now I’m totally kicking myself for taking so long to see it. Written by Kurt Sutter, this movie takes you from the top all the way to the bottom. It’s powerful, touching, heartbreaking and uplifting, among other things. The movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams, Forest Whitaker, and 50 Cent.

Billy Hope is at the top of his professional boxing career, never lost a fight. He has the perfect wife, perfect daughter, perfect house, perfect cars, just all around perfect life. Following a match defending his Light Heavyweight title, he is challenged by an up and coming boxer Miguel Escobar. His manager denies this request, telling him there are better fights out there. Later that night at their home, Billy’s wife Maureen, convinces him to retire while he’s on top.

After a charity event for an orphanage where he and his wife grew up, Escobar taunts Billy, leading to a fight where Maureen is accidentally shot by a member of Escobar’s crew. In a powerful tragic scene Maureen dies in Billy’s arms. After a bit of time, Billy’s manager and accountant come to him saying you have no money coming in but a ton of bills. Worried, Billy agrees to a multi-million dollar contract. Depressed and lost from losing his wife, he throws his first fight and attacks a referee which leaves him suspended. He breached the contract by attacking the referee and throwing the fight, the company and ref both sue him. This leads him to drugs and alcohol and a near fatal crash. He loses his house and his cars and eventually custody of his daughter too.

Hitting rock bottom, Billy realizes he has to change and with the help of Tick Wills a seasoned boxer who owes a gym, he tries to get things back on track. Tick gives Billy a job and after some time Billy convinces Tick to begin training him. Not long after, Tick has Billy fight in a charity event, more level-headed, he wins. His former manager then offers him a title shot against Escobar. The intensity of this fight is epic. The growth of Billy’s character is beyond amazing. I cannot recommend this movie enough. It definitely hits you in the feels quite a few times, but man this movie is worth it. Beautifully written and perfectly acted. If you haven’t already seen this movie, run don’t walk, and pick it up today!

It’s not something you want to miss!!!
