Renovations, I Think Not

AHS: Hotel’s latest episode titled Flicker showed us men attempting to start renovations on The Cortez. With Will’s busy schedule our builders find themselves opening up a wall that leads into a dark and eerie hallway. Now it wouldn’t be AHS if something creepy didn’t happen. Click the jump to find out all the horrors to behold in this latest episode.

The men wander down the hallway and are immediately attacked by emaciated, decaying vampires in 1920’s attire. We jump to John at an institution being examined by a doctor and he is entirely comfortable being locked away from his family and The Hotel. The Countess and Iris discuss the renovations and The Countess is actually scared of what escaped from the newly opened hallway. Remember the realtor that survived Murder House, well she really should have gotten out of the murder biz. There’s a bloodstain with her name on it now.

We get to see more of The Countess’ backstory and we learn that she was obsessed with an Italian actor, Rudolph Valentino, who looks exactly like Tristan. She met him in 1925 on the set of a movie, she was just a young mortal ingenue back then. His wife breaks up their evening, but he insists that she stay and the evening turns from just a duo to a trio. Maybe The Countess should have grown more accustomed to the whole open relationship thing, it might have kept her from gaining so many enemies. The movie star she loved, Valentino/Tristan/Finn Wittrock, dies and Mr. March stops her from killing herself. For a man obsessed with death you’d think he’d have let her jump, though he does seem to want her as his captive.

Three girls are standing in front of Rudolph Valentino’s resting place, it looks like the crypt from Asylum, and while they discuss a woman in black leaving a rose for him The Countess emerges. His wife insists that he isn’t dead and suddenly Valentino appears. He looks rather handsome in his fedora and trench coat. It turns out his stunt double is the dead man and The Countess married Mr. March when she thought she was all alone. She learns her new husband is a murderer and tells him that he should kill for profit and not just for fun. Valentino reveals that he was being stalked by a vampire when he was on tour and that he found himself turned by a German director, the man who made Nosferatu, F.W. Murnau. Valentino turned his wife and the two of them turned The Countess.

Back to the present we hear a security guard discussing the Ten Commandments murders with a nurse. It turns out John is crazy like a fox and got himself locked up so he could find out who the police think the murderer is. He knocks out the one guard and lets himself into the locked ward. John finds a young girl with blond hair in a schoolgirl’s dress, she looks like one of The Countess’ children. She tells him that she helped at more than one of the murders. John tells her that she isn’t responsible, but she blames herself for everything that happened. The girl was rescued years ago by The Countess from her terrible father and she insists she’ll help John if he helps her get out.

Marcy was a snack for Valentino and Natacha, it turns out a very vindictive Mr. March took care of them all those years ago. Mr. March and The Countess are meeting for their monthly meal, he wishes he could meet with her more. She tells him that she’s planning to marry Will, though he suggests she kill him outside of the Hotel. Mr. March reveals to The Countess that he had locked Valentino and Natacha away all those years ago. Though did he hire deaf bricklayers? That was a lot of screaming that they didn’t hear. After a snack from Down Under Valentino and Natacha make their way out of The Hotel, just as John and the girl escape from the mental institution. She then tells him they need to go to The Cortez and runs out in front of a truck! I totally didn’t expect that.

We won’t be able to check back in for two weeks, but when we do the episode will be focused on The Ten Commandments Killer. This season has been crazy so far and I’m excited to see what will happen next week. I hope Angela Bassett, Matt Bomer, Denis O’Hare, and Sarah Paulson are back next time. I missed them in this episode.
